It seems like there’s a new social media craze in the photography world every few months. A few months ago it was SnapChat. Right now it’s Periscope. Next month, who know?
When there’s a craze, like we have right now with Periscope, it’s all you hear about from other photographers. Just today I saw a photographer in a Facebook group boasting about how much her seniors LOVE Periscope. I looked her up to see what she was doing that they loved so much and she had 13 followers. I’m not making that up. So while her seniors may LOVE Periscope, they may not necessarily love HER on Periscope.

Others will possibly stumble across your work through searches, but the viral potential is much more limited on these platforms. For that reason, it’s important that you ask your seniors to share your work on Instagram or Twitter and tag you. Doing that puts your work in front of all their friends and can lead to more followers for you.
Is my target market using it?
This one is obvious. If I’m trying to reach seniors and there are no seniors on LinkedIn, why would I invest time learning to market effectively with their platform? On the other hand, if you’re trying to increase you headshot business maybe LinkedIn makes perfect sense.

Right about now you’re probably saying Facebook is dead with seniors in my area and for the most part that’s probably true. Seniors just don’t use Facebook the way they used to. While they’re much more likely to post their selfies on SnapChat these days, but a lot of them still check in from time to time on Facebook.

If I’m going to spend time creating kickass marketing content, why would I want to put it out there and have it disappear in a few days? If I follow Target, they can pitch me toothpaste this week and cheap sandals the next. If I’m interested in them as a brand I’m going to follow them to see what this week’s deal is. We sell a specific product that people want when they want it. On the surface you might be saying, well if I keep hitting them with specials and other photo ideas on something like SnapChat, eventually they may decide to buy.
