iRony is an animated short film made by an 18-year-old film maker named Radheya Jegatheva from Perth. He started by writing a poem called ‘seven billion people’ which won two national poetry awards. He then decided to turn it into a short film, which quickly became very successful in the film industry. The film has won 74 awards and been selected for 168 film festivals around the world. iRony is a very controversial film, which shows the negative outlook on the use of rising modern technology and smartphones in this era.

The first image we see is a clock which then changes to a phone screen which states the opening sentence- ‘Welcome to the real world don’t put down your devices, or else you might notice your addiction, your vices’. This line introduces the film with a deep message, meaning we live in an age where we are living in a fake world, where we are constantly relying on and using our devices. If we were to put them down, we would notice how addicted we really are. Radheya’s father Jay Jay Jegathesan narrates the film in a deep and robotic like voice. One of the scenes shows a woman posting pictures of herself on her social media account with the username, ‘give me likes’. Above her posts are flashing neon lights which say, ‘validate me.’ When the lights flicker they change to ‘date me’. She posts these types of pictures of herself for sex appeal and validation from others, which she feels she needs to have social acceptance. One of the pictures then swing to the left to reveal the woman crying in a dark corner, with help carved into the wall. This explains the fake masks that people put on for social media, when really it is not like that in their life behind closed doors. In this case she isn’t as happy and confident as she may seem in her posts. There are also unrealistic body and appearance expectations that people, especially teens feel as though they have to live up to, so they can portray the perfect life of celebrities and Instagram models.
