To ask me to list my favorite books, movies, songs, and other miscellaneous forms of entertainment would be such a difficult task. This question always stressed me out because there are simply so many great movies and books. With that being said, if I were to pick a book and movie that I have read so many times that the pages are worn down and dog-eared and a movie that I viewed enough times that I could pass as a cast member, then I present to you: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews. Both this film and book are widely acclaimed pieces of literature and thespianism. I found this book at a used bookshop that smelled of must and dreams and I can honestly say that I will probably never spend three dollars so wisely ever again. I considered myself well read and a slight history “buff” I thought I knew all that there was to know about World War II and the spread of communism, yet I knew nothing about its impact in Afghanistan. For someone who has many Afghan friends, speaks a little Pashto, and has been lectured at by old Afghani Aunties in the Mosque, I labeled myself as being well rounded in Afghan history until I saw how culture, religion, and politics were so intricately intertwined in one of the most barren landscapes of the twenty-first century. A Thousand Splendid Suns guided me through this quagmire of a country that faced attacks from Mongols, the Muslims, the Russians and ended with the invasion of the American Army. It showed how love can coexist in times of war, how society changed, and the death of innocence. I learned that sometimes the most beautiful things can come from the most hateful people and the opposite. It is just one of those books that need to be taught in school to show the beauty and ugliness of
