If you have a passion dedicated to helping clients solve their issues, this would be the perfect career for you. According to IFSW (2014), the social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well being. Principles of human right and social justice are extremely fundamentals to social work, especially when advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. This profession is open to all types of people who are interested in obtaining a degree in social work. The first level of degree is bachelors, then masters, and doctoral. Some states are required to have a license to practice social work. To be able to be a social worker, you must have the ability to be patient, be able to sit and listen, to empathize, persist, be resilient, and open-minded to be able to deal with deeply troubled clients. 82% of the social workers were female, because they are more prone to empathize, to sit and listen, to better deal with situations than men (Fischl 2014). The median annual wage for social workers was $44,200 in May 2012 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2014). The median annual wages for social workers in 2012 in different fields of social work: $54,560 for all other social workers; $49,830 for healthcare social workers; $41,530 for child, family, and school social workers; $39,980 for mental health and substance abuse social workers. For District of Columbia where I currently reside, the annual wage for Child, Family, and School social workers is $51,290. For Medical and Public Health social workers, the annual wage is $66,270. Then Mental Health social workers’ annual wage is $47,950. All other social workers earn about $51,590 annually. We basically work with those who are either in jail or out of jail, helping them get the services they need. Since there are broad ranges of fields that social workers can be in, I must truthfully say this is not my field. What I really want to work in is in a field related to domestic violence or something to do with children such as social services. I’m hoping to be contracted under government services. After researching all of the economic information and the challenges social workers would go through, I will still be a social worker. I would want to be governmental social though. They have a higher pay. I will still enjoy being a social worker ten years later. I want to still be able to advocate and deal with clients not only on the micro level, but also mezzo and macro level.
