Throughout life one faces many situations therefore coming into contact with a variety of different people, in turn making relationships that one can learn from. It is from the opportunities we have working with others that we form our own personal leadership traits. There are many different leadership styles and over the course of the many opportunities that I have to serve as a leader, I have not only developed, but formed my personal leadership style. In his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John Maxwell explores laws that include aspects of leadership such as laws that can be learned, laws that stand alone, and laws that carry consequences, but all are the foundations of leadership. While studying each of the 21 Laws of Leadership, I have tried to visualize how I can personally apply each of the laws to my life whether I am serving as a leader or serving under a leader. The laws of leadership presented in John Maxwell’s, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership are applicable no matter what position one holds when working with others, because they allow one to analyze the environment in which they work. I personally found it helpful to assess my leadership abilities by analyzing each of the laws, especially the Law of Solid Ground. Trust is truly a foundation of leadership. The people I have lead and work with often come to me with questions or issues they have, knowing that they can count on me. Establishing a trustworthy relationship between oneself and those they lead is extremely important. According to the laws of leadership the traits associated with the Law of Influence, Law of Intuition, and the Law of Timing are those in which I could improve upon. Although I am aware that as a leader one’s primary goal is to have influence over others, the Law of Influence is one that I struggle to connect with. I like to serve as a leader who is part of a team, instead of a leader who is in charge of the team. I firmly believe that in order to be a good leader, one must learn how to become a good follower. I do enjoy forming relationships and connecting with others; however, in terms of a work environment, that could jeopardize the influence I have over those I work with. As I work, I heavily rely on procedures and conventional ways of working towards a goal. When considering the Law of Intuition, as a leader I must be able to explain why I am conducting a certain task and what it has to do with the end result. However, someone who truly embodies the leadership traits associated with the Law of Intuition would be able to sense what the right thing to do is without explaining why or despite not having evidence to support their thoughts.
