Vacci-Nation Hey, you! Yes, you! Do you know what vaccines are? Do you know how they work? Most importantly, do you know how important they are to your health? Well, if you would just give up a few minutes of your time, all of these questions will be answered for you and you will have made one big step towards making this nation a “vacci-nation.” What Are Vaccines? Vaccines are substances used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease. In other words, vaccines prevent sicknesses…and as you may have already known, being sick is not “ill.” “Vaccine” Well, think about it like this: would you want to be sick with a disease like the flu for the rest of your life, knowing that there is vaccine that will help prevent you from ever getting the flu again? Some people would answer “no,” but there are people who will also answer “yes.” Both of these answers may be correct when it come to the importance of being vaccinated. A person can be immune to a disease if they are given the vaccine enough for their body to be trained to resist it, (Mandal, 2013) which is why there are some people saying “yes” to not getting vaccinated because “it makes you feel sicker than you already are,” but would you rather get vaccinated and have a better chance of not getting the flu, or would you rather be unprotected from it as well as other diseases that that are still in existence that may cause illnesses and death? Let us not forget that diseases can travel. (“10 Reasons to Be Vaccinated,” N/A) Discussion/Conclusion So, as you may have just learned, vaccines are used to treat diseases. They work by allowing our bodies to create antibodies without any risk of infection from diseases. The importance of vaccines are that getting vaccinated saves time, money, and most importantly, it saves lives. Now, it up to you to make the decision. Would you like to be sick forever or would you like to help America come one step closer to becoming a vacci-nation? If you are, then congratulations; if not, well hopefully someone else will
