Transportation is not just technology but rather is a system created by people that depends on money, energy, land and culture. The internal-combustion engine, which runs on either gas, oil or air, was invented in the 1880’s and was used almost immediately in car production. This new development of technology in cars made travel cheaper and faster. Between the 1990’s to 1920’s, consumers chose the internal combustion powered automobile because it provided power, reliability and economical affordability. Consumers in the early 20th century wanted internal combustion cars because those cars fit their standard terms of money, land, speed and appeal for the American automobile industry.

Kirsch argues the electric motor and battery is better than the internal combustion engine. He promotes the idea of the cab service by Morris and Salem. In the early 20th century Henry Morris and Pedro Salom, two philadelphian engineers thought about creating a monopoly company. They created the Electric Vehicle Company which was the largest car maker in the United States. The reason the engineers car were so popular was because they would rent or lease vehicles instead of selling them. You could pick up an E.V.C.( Electric Vehicle Company) car for a short trip or take it for a week or a month, but you could not own it. The engineers wanted the company to be available for short ranged trips. The pro about the cab service was it provided consumers with a clean environment in the city. The con about the the cab service, was the batteries were heavy and required a charging station with staff. It also took a long process just to change the batteries. The electric car was favored by women because it is safe, easiest to control, simple design, better speed and range for women with families. The car industry targeted women who had both wants and needs according to the economic theory. Women wanted cars that they could depend on. Cars helped women save on money and energy. Volti explains the gender roles of the car industry. Electric cars were associated with women during this time period of the early 20th century. Volti claims that men prefered to buy broken cars, just so they could fix them and show off their masculinity. While women used the cars to fulfil their “daily routine” such as shopping, “pleasure seeking” (pampering themselves) and “calling”.
