Abuse is an important health concern for everyone and it affects a large portion of our population. The people who are effected suffer some type of affects during the abuse as well as after the abuse. This is a harmful situation and has traumatic effects on individuals, couples, as well as families. People around the abuser focus all their time, energy, and resources on them and this can put a strain on things. The site reflects on the effects that drugs have on the body and what they can cause if not stopped. There are a number of health concerns that come along with drug use. The effects on the body while on the drugs are very harmful to the body as well as the people witnessing the problem. When people are coming off the drugs they will be certain side effects they will have to go through to completely detox their selves. When pregnant mothers use drugs they are a great amount of things that could happen to the child. This poses great danger to mother and child.
After reviewing the article there was some information on the effects of drugs use while pregnant and the things that could happen if the drug use is not stopped. These birth defects are not to be taken lightly and should be an incentive to stop. Also, the effects of drug use on the body, brain, and all around health are high and very harmful. The information in the article was establishing whether people can take drugs and be addicted verses those who can take drugs just as a recreational activity. Most people are taking drugs to soothe something going on in their lives or to fill a void. People try drugs for many reasons and continue using them because they think it makes them better. The article also discusses how and when people initially begin the use of drugs.
After reading over the article I agree with a lot of the information because I have seen it firsthand. When people go to a party and there are drugs sometimes they use drugs to fit in or seem cool, but they are wrong. The problems that can lead up regarding that decision are usually more harmful than they do good. If people are experiencing a low point in their life they tend to look for something to take their mind off of that problem and drugs are a number one go to
In this episode of intervention they follow Dallas, a twenty-one year old heroin addict. At the time of the documentary, Dallas had been living on the streets for four years with her boyfriend, Jason, who was also a heroin addict. Dallas had been addicted to heroin for five years – with this many years of abuse the veins in her arms and hands had become overused, they were sore and leaky. Because of this Dallas had moved to injecting heroin into her femoral vein, a very dangerous act. With one slip of her needle she could hit the femoral artery and bleed out. But most of all there was the danger of her enduring addiction; chronic heroin use can lead to liver disease, respiratory failure and death.
The war on drugs in our culture is a continuous action that is swiftly lessening our society. This has been going on for roughly 10-15 years and has yet to slow down in any way. Drugs continue to be a problem for the obvious reason that certain people abuse them in a way that can lead to ultimate harm on such a person. These drugs do not just consist of street drugs (marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy), but prescription medications as well. Although there are some instances where drugs are being used by subjects excessively, there has been medical research to prove that some of these drugs have made a successful impact on certain disorders and diseases.
Substance abuse and addiction have become a social problem that afflicts millions of individuals and disrupts the lives of their families and friends. Just one example reveals the extent of the problem: in the United States each year, more women and men die of smoking related lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined (Kola & Kruszynski, 2010). In addition to the personal impact of so much illness and early death, there are dire social costs: huge expenses for medical and social services; millions of hours lost in the workplace; elevated rates of crime associated with illicit drugs; and scores of children who are damaged by their parents’ substance abuse behavior (Lee, 2010). This paper will look at the different theories used in understanding drug abuse and addiction as well as how it can be prevented and treated.
The topic of interest I chose to write my article review on was babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Drugs are extremely impacting our society in negative ways. Women who are addicted to drugs do not make the best decisions. One of the worst decisions they make is to have unprotected sex and get pregnant while still using. When babies are born addicted because their mothers used during the pregnancy they will have what is known as neonatal abstinence syndrome. In 2012, every 25 minutes a baby was born with NAS. In total that year there was 21,732 babies born addicted. These babies didn't even have the choice, they were born addicts. This will effect them negatively for the rest of their lives, and more than likely cause them to be an addict themselves. One illicit drug that has gone through extensive research is cocaine. Prenatal cocaine exposure has shown to affect the baby physically (defects including eye, bone, genital, urinary tract, kidney, heart deformities, as well as brain hemorrhages) and cognitively (through mental delays, motor, attention, and language problems) (Berk, 2003). Cocaine affects the child subtly but significantly because of what the drug does to the body of both the mother and the growing fetus.
Drug use as well as drug abuse is on a constant rise. There is a wide spread misunderstanding about drugs. Many believe a drug is something that the government has said is illegal to use or consume. However this is not entirely true. A drug is any chemical you take that affects the way your body works. Alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and nicotine are all drugs. A drug must be able to pass from your body into your brain. Once inside your brain, drugs can change the messages your brain cells are sending to each other, and to the rest of your body. They do this by interfering with your brain's own chemical signals, I will discuss this further later on in the paper.
Typically, almost everyone in the world has taken drugs at some point in their life. Whether it be over the counter medication or prescription drugs. People get sick, they have illness, allegories, sexually transmitted diseases or other aches and pains. As you may already know, there is medication for each aforementioned problem. This is called drug use, which is using drugs for its intended purpose. However, the real dilemma happens when people began to misuse and abuse drugs.
There are two reasons why drug use ought to be prohibited, one is that it causes harm to the user and the second is that it causes harm to people other than the user (third parties). The argument that drug use causes harm to the user is supported by the fact that illicit drugs may can worsen the user’s health and in some causes can even causes death. Secondly, drugs can damage the user relationship with the people he cares about the most. When a person is on drugs, it messes with their sense of judgement and their reactions to certain things- such as they may argue with their bosses, their parents or anyone close to them for that matter. Also, people who uses drugs are more likely to have financial problems. Whatever money they get from working, they would spend it on drugs and not on necessities, and whenever they do not have money they will do anything in their power such as staling to obtain it. Drug abuse and addiction are issues that affect people everywhere. However, these issues are usually treated as criminal activity rather than issues of public health. There is a conflict over whether addiction related to drug abuse is a disease or a choice. Addiction as a choice suggests that drug abusers are completely responsible for their actions, while addiction as a disease suggests that drug abusers need help in order to break their cycle of addiction. There is a lot of evidence that suggests that addiction is a disease, and should be treated rather than punished. Drug addiction is a disease because: some people are more likely to suffer from addiction due to their genes, drug abuse brought on by addictive behavior changes the brain and worsens the addiction, and the environment a person lives in can cause the person to relapse because addiction can so strongly affect a person.
Cocaine is a dangerous drug that acts as a stimulant on the brain (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2013). It is derived from the leaves of the South American coca plant and can be found as a powder, or be produced as a rock crystal, also known as crack. Cocaine is injected or snorted and produces a high that is euphoric, and the individual has increased energy and becomes very talkative (NIDA, 2013). Because cocaine is a stimulant, it increases blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature (NIDA, 2013). In the brain, cocaine causes dopamine to build up between synapses (NIDA, 2013). Therefore, there is not reuptake and the dopamine increases, creating this intense euphoria (NIDA, 2013). Cocaine carries a high risk of addiction, since tolerance continually increases. Heart attack, stroke, and malnourishment are other side effects (Ackerman, 2014). The emotional effects include paranoia, anxiety, and irritability (Ackerman, 2014). Cocaine is potent substance, and the effects on a pregnancy can be devastating. It is not known what amount creates the danger or birth defects, but cocaine has an effect on weight, length, premature labor, miscarriage in utero, and more effects are common after the birth and throughout the child's growth (Ackerman, 2014).
The first ethical issue described in the read and sing scenario are abusive or intimidating behavior. For instance, Curtis verbally torments Jackie and threatens her that her music would go nowhere unless she agrees to his demands. The second dilemma is lying. Curtis had lied to Jackie in the first place to the extent of getting sexual favors all in the name of love. Little did Jackie know this was a fraud. The third issue is discrimination. Because of Jackie’s gender, there seems to be no one in the company willing to help her out. The final issue is sexual harassment. Curtis places demands on Jackie in order to help her spearhead her career.

As soon as a drug addicted baby is born they will face many problems and suffer through pain. The pain would be caused because of drug withdrawal, in which the mom would understand. Drug Addicted babies don’t choose the life that they are given based off of their mothers choices made during the pregnancy. So, we should try and prevent this from happening to other babies and help the mothers with their drug addiction.
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.
