Discrimination in the Work Environment

Privilege is something that is given to a person that allows them to have an advantage over most other people. In my opinion people should earn their way in the world and they should certainly not be given something because of the way they look or denied something for that same reason. David Hale discusses five main components of privilege, those are: privilege is a special advantage, privilege is not granted it is earned, privilege is a right or entitlement that is related to a preferred status or rank, privilege is exercised for the benefits of the recipient and the detriment of others, privilege is normally understood by the person possessing it. One thing I really have to argue is privilege is not granted it is earned. I do not agree because many people are privileged because of what they are born into. There is no reason a woman or man should be more or less qualified for a job because of they are simply a different gender. The same applies to two applicant’s skin color, or even their waist line. There are a few qualities that seem to deter people from getting a job, and it is based on their looks. It may be surprising that employers are allowed to turn away applicants simply because of their appearance, that is if they do not deviate from any civil rights law that governs against discrimination of “race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), and disability” (Cavico). This is unfortunate because daily people are denied jobs because they are not society’s vision of normal, and these people are not privileged to have a job because of their appearance.
