What is depression? According Emily Dotterer, “Having depression is like being in abusive relationship with yourself.” Depression is a mood disorder that effects people in both physical and mental ways. Just as Brenda Sue Hagen stated, “It’s like someone unplugged you from the socket of feelings.” The disorder does not just effect the one who is depressed but it also effects their friends and family. It is a mood disorder that causes an ongoing feeling of sadness and/or loss of interest. “Depression is an inability to feel anything.” If one is depressed then they may not experience pleasure, they may have feelings of guilt and low self-esteem. By genetic factors, that is how things are transmitted from one generation to the next. As the biologists stated in the article we must also know that one is liable to develop depression from environmental stressors. Some examples of environmental stressors may be the noise from an alarm clock or just the noise surrounding, crowding, air quality, natural disasters, and etc. Brewin emphasized “that depending on the misfortunes that one may have had as a child, depression could be contributed to them.” Any type of trauma that may have happened in the earlier years that may not be all the way processed may lead to depression. If one experienced sexual abuse, then that may lead to depression. The person may blame their self for that happening to them and they may become ashamed of their body. Depression is treatable so it is best to seek help from a doctor or psychiatrist. When speaking with someone it will help with learning what exactly depression is and the doctor will be able to help you with the right approach in coping. Whether one has to go through therapy or medication, there are ways to deal with depression. With going to therapy or taking medication one will be able to overcome and go back to living their normal everyday life.
