Sociological Imagination Essay I am unsure how to define what generation of immigrant I am. I was born in London in the UK and then moved to the US when I was 7 years old. This would make me a first generation immigrant, however, I was born a US citizen. My mom is from the US and my dad is from the UK. My mom moved to the UK after marrying her first husband, who was British. They got divorced but she decided to stay in England and at that time she met my dad. My dad had another son from his first marriage and then my younger brother and me were both born in the UK. As a result, my younger brother and I have been dual citizens since birth. The United States is a nation of immigrants but also a nation of Americans, when exactly does it happen that an immigrant becomes an American? Most of the people in the United States came from Europe or their ancestors came from Europe. Many immigrants were poor, day laborers who chose to live in the city. They came to America in hope of a better economic life. Many lived in sections of the city that suffered from severe poverty. They often lived in run down tenement houses that were unsafe. All the while, they clung to the cultures of the “old world” they just left. It was not until the 1880s that things began to change. Jane Addams, a middle class woman, decided to help the impoverished immigrants. She opened a settlement house and she called it Hull House. It was the first settlement house in the United States. She focused on Chicago’s most poverty-stricken area. The Hull House became the social center for immigrants. It offered night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gym, a bathhouse and so much more. Hull House helped immigrants become part of the social world in America. It also tried to Americanize the immigrants and encouraged them to assimilate into the American culture. In short, when Jane Addams founded the Hull House she wanted to help immigrants become part of the American culture and she persuaded them to leave the customs of the “old world” in their past.
According C.Wright.Mills (1959), sociological imagination enables one to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals. It enables one to take into account how individuals, in the welter of their daily experience, often become falsely conscious of their social positions. It is not only information that they need - in this Age of Fact; information often dominates their attention and overwhelms their capacities to assimilate it. It is not only the skills of reason that they need although their struggles to acquire these often exhaust their limited moral energy. What they need, and what they feel they need, is a quality of mind that will help them to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within them.
The United States is a country known for its variation of nationalities and ethnic races. After extensive research, and questioning I discovered that my ancestors originated from Norway and Switzerland. My family migrated to the United States in the late 1800’s from Norway due to social, economic, and religion reforms as well as, a surplus in the population. Learning of my ancestor’s migration to America has very much influenced my views on the existing immigration problems that the U.S. currently faces.

An immigrant, also known as an alien, is person or people who come from a foreign country. Aliens are broken down into two main categories: the legal aliens and the illegal aliens. For centuries, migrating has been a life changing decision for people that choose to enter the United States in search of a better future. Therefore, immigration is the permanent residency of people that choose to move to a new country. There are debates concerning the immigrants who enter the United Stated illegally and as the daughter of immigrant parents, I am fortunate to be born in this country.
For academic and activist Casey Walden, the interest in sociology developed as a kind of gradual awakening. Casey prefers pronouns she/her/hers or they/them/theirs, however, in this paper I will be utilizing only she/her/hers. Casey is a twenty-year-old student at Simmons College, pursuing the study of sociology amongst other concentrations. An interview session with her allowed me to delve into the intricacies of the interview process by analyzing how the conversation progressed, and to explore more about why she is majoring in sociology. In this paper, I will aim to discuss salient points that were mentioned throughout the interview, as well as reflect on the experience of conducting one. Throughout the fluid process of directing the interview, I was able to gage Casey's demographic background, motives, and aspirations regarding her major in sociology.
Social theories provide us with a new perspective in the social world. With new perspectives, new opinions can be made. also, they can provide answers or explain a specific social spectacle. Social theories can help clarify and predict the way the social world works. The three major sociological perspectives are functionalism, the conflict theory, and the symbolic interaction theory. Each theory is different and can help answer many questions about human behavior in a social world.

Immigration to the united states started in the 7th century, with the first arrivals of European settlers. Once immigration arrive in a new country, they start the long and difficult process of settlement and integration. People emigrate from one country to another for variety reasons. some are forced to move, due to conflict or to escape persecution prejudices, while other may voluntarily emigrate. What makes someone American is not just blood or birth but allegiances to our founding principles and faith in the idea that anyone from anywhere can write the next chapter of our story.
After reading C. Wright Mills, The Promise of Sociology Imagination, it is clear that most people feel trapped in their personal lives. They feel trapped because they are becoming more aware of all the problems in the world and the problems of the people in their close environment. The more aware they become the more trapped they feel by society. Society has shaped them to think that they have limited choices in this world. They feel as if they cannot overcome their personal challenges. Biography, is what we go through personally. This shapes us as individuals. Whereas history shapes who we are as a society. Society would be different if history did not play out the way it did. Both are different but critical to the way people fit into society.
C. Wright Mills brings about a different way to look at the world, and a different way to place one’s self into it in his work, “The Sociological Imagination”. Mills deliberates and examines the individual role one would play in society as a whole and how it is both the individual and society’s history that must be understood together to see the big picture. Man must look for the “intricate connection between the patterns of their own lives and the course of world history” (Mills, Imagination).
