The widespread use of electronic communication has given rise to a new form of bullying, taking place in cyberspace. In its traditional sense, bullying can be defined as an antagonistic, deliberate and repeated behavior of a group or an individual against a victim who cannot defend him or herself. Cyber bullying is also a deliberate and repeated behavior but it takes place online, using electronic forms of contact such as cell phones, emails, and social networking applications or sites. The availability of the Internet and the increasing popularity of social networks, along with the seeming anonymity of interactions make cyber bullying the dominant bullying form among modern youths today. On the other hand, traditional bullying (with its face-to-face involvement) is much more limited. Cyber bullying also has an infinite audience. With how advanced technology is today, it allows information to be reached by a very large audience in just a short amount of time. When bullying is happening over the Internet, it is very easy for an individual to share viscous rumors and embarrassing pictures much faster than they ever would get spread by word of mouth. When spreading rumors by word of mouth, the story could change as it travels from person to person. When rumors are being put on the Internet, everyone in the audience is seeing or hearing the exact same thing. Once something is placed in writing it is very hard to delete, or to ever get rid of it.
The permanence of cyber bullying is another reason that cyber bullying should be considered more serious than traditional bullying. The victim can preserve the insults, comments, messages, or images posted online. As a result of saving such words, the victim can now go back and re read what has been said over and over again, causing the same feelings to resurface every time they relook at what has been posted.
