In The City of the Sun by Tommaso Campanella, in his poetic dialogue between a

Grandmaster and a Captain, the Captain mentions how in this city, that he came across, both arts

and science are very important to the society. This made me realized that this is a Utopia society,

because in a Utopia society theirs time to cultivate art and science. At first when the captain was

describing the city that was upon a hill, it seems too surreal, but as the dialogue continued and it

described the culture and their way of life, it became more relatable to some societies and

cultures we see today. The Captain described that the city of the sun had four rulers, but that

At first the

reading made me believe that this society may have been happy, because it is very organized,

stand for peace, love and knowledge, but then I realized these people didn’t really have a say in

what they wanted to contribute to the society. The people in the society either follow their duties,

morals and obligations, if not they will be looked at with shame and will be judged, they will be

an outcast to the society. There was thing I liked from the society like learning from there

surroundings, their elder and the love for art. Also that they couldn’t work long hours,

even though as I kept reading to me the investment of their time that they had to put into the

society ways, culture and routine was already a job they had to do every day and that may have

been tiring.

Even though the society didn’t have any books, but only one which is called wisdom, …show more content…

Another thing I noticed from the dialog is, that he kind of switch the rolls between

women and men when it came to occupation like gathering fruit and sowing this is mostly done

by women in most culture, while women had to milk cow and make cheese which in many others

culture is mostly done by men. Another thing the author mention through the captain is how

women are supposed to take care of the girl if their child is a girl and if it a boy the mother has

to give him to the father because of the roles in the society. It seemed unfair why can’t the boy

learn thing from the mother, as the girl can learn from the father, this is where I saw division in

males and females, not being equal to each other.

This society may seem all happy, spiritual and a great place to live in, but nothings is

ever perfect somethings that are mention just come out cold and harsh to me, like not socializing

at dinner or when having a meal, someone just reading while everyone else eats. No feeling
