1. The word “bible” means “the books”. It was written by many different people guided by God’s spirit. The bible is the best compass to help live a life enriched with understanding, appreciation, love and faith in God.

2. The bible is divided into two major parts. The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament are the books written before Jesus and the New Testament are the books written after he came.

3. The Hebrew scriptures make up most of the Old Testament and are stories of God’s love for the Hebrew people. It took about 1000 years to compile these scriptures.

4. The Old Testament scriptures are the basis of the Jewish faith and our Christian faith story is rooted in these scriptures as well. Christians can trace their roots back about 4000 years.

Two examples that don’t convey historical truth are the book of Psalms and the book of Jonah. Psalms is dedicated towards how to express our feelings to God and how we can grow a closer relationship with Him. The book of Jonah brings forth levels of meaning regarding God’s concern for all people that we wouldn’t come to know with historical truth.

These historical books in the Old Testament are different from the approach of historians because although they do somewhat explain the history of the particular period, they skip several details that a historian would definitely include. This is because they allow us to appreciate how God has shaped our history and gives us ways to connect and communicate with Him more.
