As a woman, I can encounter many advantages in life. Typically a man is expected to pay for the first date if one is request this entitles me to free food, a movie or such. Rewind to the part that I said “typically”. Two days ago I went on a date with a man, I did not get my coffee paid for. This is because, just because it is expected, it does not mean it will happen. As a female I have many privileges, not to argue that males do not have just as many. Many of these privileges go unnoticed at times. Today, I went to class wearing an “Iowa” baseball cap, male sweatpants, no make-up, and a loose fitting blue sweatshirt. The average person would not see anything wrong with my class attire. Imagine if a male went to class in attire opposite of that, he would be wearing a floppy hat, female yoga pants, make-up, and a tight-fitting pink sweatshirt. Young women around the U.S are being made to feel insecure in who they are as almost anything they wear is attacked. My own high school, Granby Memorial High School, just recently rescinded a new rule requiring that girl’s shorts and skirts are six inches from the knee or longer. The rule was rescinded after student protest when “The students were told the clothing was inappropriate for school and distracting to the male students and staff.” This misogynistic idea that a young woman’s education is not as important as a young man’s is disrespectful to young men by claiming they are unable to control themselves, and containing a concealed message that women are under men. As a young woman, seeing all the civil rights movements both in the U.S and in other countries, and being told that I am not as worthy or wanted as a man fills me with a passionate rage. We, as a country, fight for basic rights in other countries even though there are stigmas in the U.S that show women in the workplace as either secretary-like positions or women who have had to take on a “man-like” mindset in order to succeed in business. While some of these rules may be acceptable, short-shorts being banned, for example, the educational system needs to realize that with so many restrictions to dress code it would almost be better to have a uniform of nice pants and a shirt. An extremist might even say that these strict dress codes are leading towards victimization as men are not taught to control themselves so it is up to women to make sure that they are not in the position to be sexually assaulted or raped. Even if you are not an extremist, you can understand that these dress codes must change to be all inclusive. Nowadays women should be treated equally, but some very common stereotypes are still used. For example, in my last birthday, I received a gift from my friend in a pink bag. Then, I asked my friend, why he picked a pink bag, he simply replied "all women like pink," but actually he did not know that my favorite color was blue, and that does not mean that I am a boy. On another occasion, I was taking care of my little cousin, he began to play soccer, and when I asked him if I could play with him, he answered me, "not because girls do not know how to play football," his answer surprised me, so I take his soccer ball, and I showed him that he was wrong, because women can play different sports.
Feminism has transferred an impact on the American society. Some of the benefits include restructured views on careers, schooling, and privileges women obtain. The women’s movement was the main triumphant movement of the 1960s and 1970s (Epstein 125). However, without the victory of the movement nothing would be the same as it is these days. In conclusion, women vision themselves differently now then what they did thirty years ago (Epstein 125).
Dress Codes are commonplace in today's society but in recent years, outrage at restrictive dress codes are increasing. A report by The Guardian illustrates an example of a restrictive dress code. Stephanie Hughes was called to the Principal’s office because the outfit she was wearing revealed her collar bones. Her outfit, comprising of a cardigan with a tank top underneath and jeans, was deemed as by her School Principal as inappropriate attire. The Principal explains that because her outfit revealed her collar bones, it would distract fellow male students and was hence not appropriate for school. Such dress codes only highlight the objectification of females, teaching males that while it is their responsibility to study, attaining poor scores can be explained as a result of distraction by the female students’ revealing clothes. Such dress codes teach males, in this case teenage boys, that they have the right to push the blame onto the females and shirk responsibility. Also, when a man and a woman apply for the same job, the man will almost always be chosen. This has resulted in the amount of full-time working males increasing by 1 million within a years time, and the number for full-time working women remained nearly the same. To this day, females are not treated equally to males even though almost a century has gone by from 1920 when women gained their deserved suffrage rights and other rights of equivalent importance. Both men and women are standing up to spread the awareness of the meager changes to women’s rights throughout the years. One way to raise awareness is to write a book, and many books have been made about the lack of equality rights for women. In school females are told to cover up, not because a dress is too shirt, a shirt is too revealing but because it is a distracting for the males. In most High school cases, girls are subjected to unfair treatment. Many have been suspended for wearing ripped jeans, "Short" dresses for prom, tank/spaghetti strap shirts and for African American teens for their hair.
