Theme: The assault, violence, and danger, within schools and among our students, 1984-2015
Schools are supposed to be a safe environment where students can receive a proper education. Our modern American school system is failing in keeping our students safe. The way our society has changed can be seen in our schools and students. Issues that have been found in our students and schools have been brought to light in the past few years. It has forced the public to have a conversation about what is happening to our kids and in our schools.

Many kids are being bullied in schools all around our nation. This behavior has been repeated for too long. Kids bully others, they are being bullied, or they witness the bullying. The internet came along and the bullies had a new platform where they could spread rumors, post mean messages or embarrassing pictures. Now kids really could not escape their intimidators. It used to be said that getting picked on was a way to develop character. School shootings are usually done by isolated or psychotic kids who have been wronged by someone at their school. I feel that mass school shootings have been too common for the past few years. It strange to see that we are headed towards a future where school shooting may become just another crime. The only ways we bring awareness to the issue is by reporting on yet another school shooting. When in reality what needs to be done is placing more regulation on guns. Or better yet, if parents have guns at home they can put them in a locked safe, tell their kids never to touch it and speak to their kids about gun
For the school year of 2012-2013, there were about 98,328 public schools in the nation, that would mean that in each and every elementary, Middle, and High school in the nation, an estimated two students do not show up to school because of the fear of being bullied. “Further, students who are being bullied may begin stealing money or being dishonest about being ill” (Levine, 2014). “Children who engage in bullying from a young age may be involved in what is known as precursory bullying. Precursory bullying has implications for future bullying, and is understood as ultimately destructive and damaging” (Levine and Tamburrino, 2014). There is no doubt about this, we’ve all heard about adults that have been bullied as children and are not successful members of society.
I believed school shootings are increased because teens have more access to guns at home, and media's portraying about gun violence. Between 2013-15 every town identified 160 school shootings across 38 states. Nearly 53 percent of the identified shootings took place at K-12 schools, and 47 percent took place on college or university campuses( Analysis of school shooting, 2015). Analysis of school-associated violent deaths between 1992-99 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which found that 56 percent of students involved directly in a school-associated homicide or suicide used a firearm, and of those guns for which the source could be determined, 79 percent were obtained from the shooter’s home or that of a friend or relative. According to report issued by the University of Southern California School of Medicine, approximately 35% of U.S. homes with children under age 18 have at least one firearm, meaning that roughly 11 million children live in homes with firearms. Some school critics and statisticians have observed that drug-dealing, vandalism, robbery, and murder have replaced gum-chewing, “talking out of turn,” tardiness, and rudeness as the most chronic problems afflicting today’s schools. If the intent of this observation is to shock and rattle the public’s sensibilities, it’s working. Of course, some of us may interpret such suggestions as merely dark, stoic, and cynical—“scare” tactics quite in keeping with the current national mood about many social issues these days.
Bullying is a prevalent issue in school communities across the world which has caused great damages to the bullied. In fact, suicides is one of the leading cause of deaths in students 10 to 14 years old and the cause of suicide was overwhelmingly from bullying. Bullying is pervasive amongst all age groups; statistics show there is an estimated 1 in 7 students grades K-12 who are being bullied. Social media is increasingly becoming the new medium for bullying where anonymity allow bullies to be as toxic as pleases them. So what good solutions has our schools came up for this? Nothing, most students agree.
It is necessary for the schools in the United States to take more action in order to keep the students safe during the day. It is obvious that schools are not safe, forcing everyone to take a part in stopping the violent behavior which takes place in schools on a daily basis. There are many warning signs and ways to prevent this violence from taking place, it is just a matter of using money more wisely and creating more programs for preventing violence before it erupts in schools. There is no excuse for students to feel unsafe in an environment which the government forces them to be in. It is necessary that more action take place and that more training take place in order for schools to be safer, and in the event where violence does occur, the staff of the school is equipped to stop it before it gets out of hand. There is no time like now to keep the children and our schools safe from predators and especially from school violence.
In recent news, there is a good chance that a story has been reported on school violence. It is alarmingly happening all over the country, in all types of schools. There have been shootings at high schools, elementary schools, colleges, prep schools, and more, as well as stabbings, physical beatings, and other horrific incidences that one would never want to happen to themselves. This rate of incidences, no matter how severe or not, seems to be much too high. Schools are hailed as being one of the safest places a person could be outside of home. With violent attacks coming into such a safe place, people have a right to be worried.
Depending on your definition of “school shooting,” you can say that there have or haven’t been 18 school shootings in 2018. Personally, I would say no that there haven’t, but in my opinion, there shouldn’t be any at all. Yes, there are people who want to go shoot up a school the question is why and how did they get the firearm or weapon. To answer the first question there can be a number of reasons, being mistreated, both at home and at school. There is also hatred towards people and possible mental issues that could come into play. Shouldn’t these people who have said mental issues not have access to firearms? Yes, they should be restricted with there access to firearms. You hear it on the news, around your community, and even within your own school, school shootings are rapidly becoming part of our everyday life. Mass shootings have only increased the the United states, children are being shot at school and you wonder why the United States Government is continuing to allow our students and teachers to die? Gun laws in the United States need to be more regulated to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. Without gun regulations innocent students, friends, teachers and parents will continue to be harmed. Also, students and teachers need to be trained differently on how to handle shootings, and more preparations that need to be in place.
School is a place that people should be able to learn in a positive managed atmosphere. Even though this is true in past years school has been everything but. There have been eighteen school’s shootings nationwide since the short-lived year of 2018. What is the cause of this dilemma? America is supposed to be at a peak in technology but still cannot find a solution to this predicament? Well the problem at hand is simple. Keep guns away from people that have no business having them in the first place.
Or stronger school safeguards? In 2015, the average number of shootings per week, on average, on a school campus was 1 (Jill Berkowicz). In order to change what is happening in our schools we need to change the people, not the weapons. We do not need stricter gun laws, we need to help those people who think it is right to go and shoot at innocent children. 73% of school shooters had no prior criminal record, not even an arrest (Jill Berkowicz).
Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). There are two types of bullying the direct form and indirect form, in the direct form the victim receives physical harm example kicking pushing shoving. In the indirect form the victim receives emotional or mental harm by name-calling, rejection, gossip, threats, or insults(Green,2007). It doesn’t matter which way the victim was bullied it still causes
Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.
Seeing the freshman running into the office claiming that he was assaulted in the restroom prompts me, as the principal of the school, to take immediate action to keep and protect him in the office. I will call the school police officer to investigate the incidence immediately. Since the three upper-classmen who allegedly assaulted the freshman and the possible witness teacher were identified by the alleged victim, they will all be summoned immediately to be interrogated by the police officer.
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. In a perfect world there would be no bullying, but if you could ask Rachel Scott she would tell you we do not live in a perfect world, only a hopeful one.
Bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States are refusing to go to school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone, there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (Dan Olewus, MBNBD). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new set of solutions. Any type of bullying presents problems to children, “Suicide, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trouble with the law, poor performance in school and work, and lack of involvement in socially accepted activities are some of the difficulties resulting from bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). Of course, there is more than just a single type of bullying. Feeding ground for bullies can range anywhere from text-message or cyberbullying to physical bullying in schools. Also, bullies can begin to strike at a young age and could also be; teenage, middle-age, or even the elderly. Even though there are these many versions of problematic bullies, the largest bullying problems take place within the school setting: a place that is supposed to be safe for children rather than harmful. Although it seems impossible to completely get rid of bullying, these are a few suggested solutions; making the school informed on bullying issues, schools implementing rules on bullying, and having students positively use electronics to stop bullying.
