The central discussion in this paper is the application of a nursing theory to resolve problems associated with nursing leadership. Problems arising from lack of strategic leadership in nursing results in stress, nurses’ burnout, lack of adequate training, nurses’ shortage, emotional distress, and lack of motivation. Emotional challenge extends to nursing leadership whose responsibility is to ensure that the necessary changes needed in the organization are put into place. Nursing leaders are the change agents within the hospitals for example, as such, they are the ones with the responsibility to devise strategies and develop plans that ensure the success of the organization. The social system and its relationship to nursing leadership is concentrated on in this paper. Leadership principles in nursing according to Hersey, Blanchard and Johnson (2011) necessitates attitudinal and situational traits that are common to other disciplines ambitious of attaining organizational goals and objectives. An understanding of King’s social system and its application to nursing leadership is helpful to the nursing profession’s success.
Social system according to King (1992) focuses on attaining organizational goals and objectives by applying organizational principles, authority, power, status, and the decision making process. Solving nursing leadership problems as it relates to change will require nursing leaders to be creative and innovative. Nursing is knowledge based and emphasizes learning as an organization. Huber (2013) emphasized that organizations that are interested in changing should embrace continuous learning and system value adaptation. Peter-O’Grady and Malloch (2011) four structural component of change; empowerment, shared decision making, self-direction, and shared governance is the strategy adapted for implementing nursing leadership change in this paper. The adapted strategy is integrated with King’s social theoretical concept; organization, authority, power, status, and decision- making to resolve the leadership issue. The applied integrated strategies in combined or as standalone will help in resolving many of the problems associated with nursing leadership
