The above verses of Psalm 63 will be discussed in the following paragraphs. There will be emphasis on how it was relevant in history and how it can be applied to the present day. Discussion will also centre on the impact this scripture has on me personally and how I apply it to my daily life. While only focussing on the first four verses of this psalm it is important to consider each psalm as a whole and read in the context of the whole for spiritual interpretation. The psalms are prayers that were addressed to God to express some truth about God in song. Bearing the above in mind I believe that I will be able to discuss these verses in how they related to ancient Israel, the contemporary church and myself.

The psalm reminds us of the place to give God in our life, he is to be our first priority and we must seek Him with all our heart. When we introduce Jesus into the equation who has done such a work of redemption and given us freedom, our worship should be ever more passionate. There are references to Jesus in the bible as being the living water, the one who will provide man with streams of living water that never run dry. Another way to view the Psalms is to think of them as describing various seasons in our life. While individual Psalms can express a huge range of emotion and describe human suffering there is generally a move towards God. Acknowledging God as Lord over my life comes out in the very first line of the psalm. My very existence depends on the Lord and reference to my whole being longing for the Lord voices of remembering times when I have felt loss and pain and been in desperate loneliness.

Verse two refers to David being in the sanctuary and beholding the Lord’s power and glory, this speaks to me of valuing and cherishing time spent with the Lord in private worship. It also emphasises to me the fact that it is essential in my walk with God to have that time as an individual worshiping God and developing this particular aspect of my relationship with God. His Love is better than life, reminds me of the emptiness I have felt before knowing Gods love and the times when I have been lukewarm for God. The scripture prompts me to always place God and His ways first in my life and that there is only true satisfaction when He is given the place and priority that He is due. “My lips will glorify you” speaks of making a choice, a declaration that no matter what the circumstances are, I will praise the Lord.
