A personal code of ethics is required to move through life as this code dictates decisions which lead to a chosen lifestyle. Each person has a code they stand their ground for whether they are conscious of lines they will not cross or not. My core values depend upon each other to create my happy little life. The primary core value is with God, as I believe, God is the one who holds the key to my life path, as I am in the position in life because this is where God wants me to be; without God, I have nothing. To me the most important code to be upheld by a long-term care nursing facility is the patient rights; in my fifteen years of nursing home management experience family members and unfortunately, sometimes even staff members believe that a person is unable to make decisions for themselves because they are sick and living in a nursing home, and this is just not true, people are capable of making their own decisions despite their living arrangements or health conditions. The bedsores and broken leg discovered by the family, after care was rendered, is considered neglect according to the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, the facility not only was fined by the state government for violations of the code of ethics, as in did not uphold the promise of the quality of care, they were also required to pay the family an undisclosed amount for their loss. While death is inevitable for all of us as we are no immortal, Grandfather, who was unable to communicate for himself, suffered the most and his journey ended with a journey of neglect by both the facility and family. Once the family contacted an attorney, the Law Offices of George S. Johnson, the information was presented in front of the courts. A judge reviewed the facts, which is Grandfather did have a broken leg and bedsores which are clear indicators of neglect. Neglect is defined within the code of ethics dictated by the NAHC of which all nursing homes and long-term care facilities must abide by. The consequence to the nursing home was a great financial reprimand; however, with the reprimand, the staff of the nursing home did undergo a re-education process as per state
