Housh’s Opinion on the Importance of Communication
Communication in the workplace is important for many reasons. According to the Houston Chronicle, effective communication helps with diversity, team building and employee morale. Furthermore, good and effective communication also affects the global business economy. Steve Burnett states it best, in my opinion, “Regardless of the changes in technology, the market for well-crafted messages will always have an audience." (Leading Thoughts, 2015). I have witnessed terrible communication interactions, but I have also witnessed excellent communication interactions. The first excellent interaction that comes to mind is the interaction between Randy Brooks, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and an irate parent. Dean Brooks listened empathically. He allowed this particular parent say what he needed to say and then he was able to fully understand what this parent was feeling. I completely agree with her argument. When communicating with administration, faculty, staff, students, etc. you must communicate clearly and concisely. In order to inspire you must be able to communicate. Therefore, communication plays the key role in “effective” leadership. There are a number of leaders that I can think of off the top of my head that are not true leaders because they are unable to communicate effectively. Therefore, I do not consider those people to be true “leaders.” Communication can help you not only get rewarded in your current position but it can also lead to promotion. If you have out-grown the position you currently hold or there is another position that you feel fits you better then how do you obtain it? Well, first and foremost you have to communicate. Communication is the foundation. Communicate your desires and build upon the skills and knowledge you have already
