Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the Sleep Foundation, "The change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others." Altering the school schedule would influence numerous aspects of people’s lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and adapted to the new schedule. Many people are resistant to change, especially if it involves reassembling their plans and procedures to adjust to the new schedule. This is a problem for parents’ work schedules since they most likely will not be able to see their kids in the morning which will leave students unsupervised when they get ready. This is also a problem for transportation since parents will not be able to take their kids to school which might cause traffic and more costs since bus schedules would change too. According to the Sleep Foundation, "If elementary students have the earliest start times, they may be waiting for the bus in the dark early mornings, or waiting at home alone after school." Later start times are thought to solve tardies and absences, but if students cannot get to school, it does not solve anything. They should be able to have enough time in the afternoon to distract themselves with other healthy activities which ensure the development of new skills and is also relaxing. Many students’ everyday activities may also be affected. Students who like to read or do their homework in the library or just spend time in any other public place will be affected since they will have less time in them because of later release times. With the new schedule, students will be too centralized on school which can lead to stress. Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. In order words, the school start times do affect many individuals, not only in the present, but carries it out throughout their lives. These long-term effects may come from the result of sleep deprivation and stress piled upon students during the school year. These issues may not seem rather insignificant at its moment, but they can and will negatively affect the children. Therefore, the starting times for schools should be pushed back a least an hour to not only to benefit the students physically and mentally, but also academically, and although there are some conflicts in doing so, the overall outcome results in giving adolescents a healthier future, with a chance of reaching greater opportunities.
Throughout The United States of America this is becoming a rising concern with today's youth. In my personal opinion I believe that school should start at a later time in the day because it would greatly benefit students. My first reason for later starting times is that it would allow students to get enough sleep , and not have to rush around in the morning to catch the bus. We have all had mornings where you felt like you just couldn’t get up because you were so exhausted. What if I told you there was a way to not have those anymore? Teens/adolescents all around the world struggle just like you to get up in the morning. Then when we get to school still tired we are expected to perform at our absolute best? Starting school later could give teens the sleep they need to execute their very best work at school. People have a lot of problems with waking up early and going to their school for 7-8 hours. It is not a rare issue. Schools should start later because teens aren’t getting enough sleep, there are a lot of risks to lack of sleep, and students perform better when they get more rest.

Many parents and students are aware that they (the students) are not getting enough sleep and that it affects their health. Some schools are pushing their school hours farther in order to help solve the sleep deprivation conflict. I qualify this solution up to the point if schools start no later than 8:30 am in the morning.
Most students have a hard time coming to school, maybe it is because they don’t like learning, or maybe because it is boring. Or, is the student’s hatred toward school because it starts way too early in the morning. You can say this because after the delay in school time started, the attendance went up which means that students wanted to show up at school. Students also felt that they were not as depressed as when the middle school starting time was earlier. You may be thinking that if the school time is delayed, children may start staying up later at night. This is not really true because going to school is a lot of work and it also requires a lot of homework to be done. Most students are tired by the end of school, and even more tired after they are done with all of their homework. Children will definitely want to go to bed early to get a full night's rest, this is because students will take advantage of this since school starts early in the morning. Even if they do go to bed late, it would probably be because of after school activities and a lot of homework, not because the children wanted to stay up late on purpose.
