Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Also many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities. 79% of American middle school and On average, high school students receive about 3.5 hours of homework each night and elementary school students are getting about three times the amount that is recommended, which is ten minutes per grade, so 10 minutes for 1st grade and 50 minutes for 5th grade. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school student would be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste. This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their schools do start later. Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before. Also students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. Students should start later because kids will have a better attendance and less tardies. This is one example of how late start improves students well-being. School starting later will allow students to be happier and more energized, this will also keep students from being disrespectful to teachers and staff. Students that started school later show that they attend their classes and actually go to school for once.

Students who stay up past 1am on average every night start developing psychological and mental health problems. Other students come to school sleep deprived and do poorly on there work. Leading students to substance abuse or higher obesity due to stress. Furthermore students who go to school at a later time never develop psychological and mental health problems unlike students who go to school at early start times.
There are many benefits that have been found to come with later school starting times. Students are more alert, ready to learn, and are healthier with later starting times.

We have all had mornings where you felt like you just couldn’t get up because you were so exhausted. What if I told you there was a way to not have those anymore? Teens/adolescents all around the world struggle just like you to get up in the morning. Then when we get to school still tired we are expected to perform at our absolute best? Starting school later could give teens the sleep they need to execute their very best work at school. People have a lot of problems with waking up early and going to their school for 7-8 hours. There is multiple facts and reasons to have later start times help students get through the school day. BY helping students get better grades, test scores, and overall better. IF schools started later we wouldn't have all these tired and groggy students coming to school we would have students that are refreshed and ready to learn. We will have students that have good grades. We will have students who have better test scores. Schools are thinking about changing the time when schools start. Picture an not awake student scrambling through the hallway in the morning, struggling to get to class. In fact, studies have shown how lack of sleep can affect our “executive function” that can result in shortened temper, lower motivation, and slower reflexes which is not something we need in life. Despite this, studies have shown that delaying a school can result in saving nine billion dollars in 2 years ( RAND 2018 ). Still, schools start too early causing grades to lower and can even cause some accidents that could have been saved with a good amount of sleep. Lack of sleep can lower test scores, waking yourself up early every day, should stop now.
If we started school later it would help out more than you think. Most kids would be getting more sleep than normal. We would even be more awake, which would help us focus more in class. Schools should start later because it’ll lead to better grades and better attitudes. When teens don’t have enough sleep some teens might start to do drugs and alcohol. Sleep is very important to all ages. Some teens have uneven sleep orders, because some may stay up late and get up late on the weekends and that may cause them to be off schedule during the week(Lewis). Even though later start time would lead kids missing end of the day classes to attend sporting events, school should start later because kids need more sleep and reduces car crashes and uses in alcohol and drugs.
I strongly believe kids should start school later than 8:00 so that they can get better grades and have more focus. If kids start school early their grades can go down and they can lose focus. Sometimes I get to school and I am tired. My school starts at 8:30 so it starts later than usual schools though, so that means schools should definitely start after 8:00. Schools that start early should definitely think about a later start time.
