In class he falls asleep in class then the teacher caught him and he gets detention. Sleep deprivation seems to be an increasing problem with people of all different age groups. It is related to many different health concerns. Nearly fifty percent of adults fail to get enough sleep. According to the national sleep foundation, teenagers need at least 9 hours of sleep a night, but 80% get a lot less than that. Due to the lack of sleep at least 28% of high schoolers fall asleep in class, 22% fall asleep while doing their homework and 14% arrive late or miss school entirely because they oversleep. Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.

Are you tired of waking up so early in the morning? Daryn doesn't get tired until 11:00. He then has basketball practice at 6:15. That means he only gets about 6 hours of sleep because he has to wake up at 5:30. After basketball he's tired, then he has to go to school and most likely falls asleep in school because he's so weary from such a busy, miniscule morning. Of course when I say we, I mean as in teens who go to school, and possibly yourself when at the time in your life. The schedule for school doesn’t fit in very well with our sleep patterns. Positive and negative outcomes would arise from the decision to begin school later and shorten the day. The problem with school commencing at the regular time, 8 am, is that it causes problems with student’s behavior, attitude, and attendance. Furthermore, all these problems would be fixed, according to scientific studies, by pushing the starting time of school back to 10 am. The effects of school starting earlier and being shortened, each causing different outcomes and problems, are additional sleep for students, better use of class time, extended school year, and transportation problems.
This is one thing that is staggering because this has also be scientifically proven but people think of the lack of sleep as an excuse or a complaint. The majority of the people say that it was their choice not to go to bed at a reasonable time, but many students that can’t help that because of a sport they play. Lastly in the article ‘Shorter School Days’ it talks about how little amounts of sleep can cause things such as violence, depression, and alcohol abuse. The reason most teens drink under aged is probably because of the amount of sleep their not getting. Also the amount of violence in schools could be lowered by having shorter school days.

This raises a serious question: why are high schools starting early in the morning when teenagers are biologically programmed to sleep in? For most cases, school start time has not been conformed to fit student physiological needs simply because of transportation issues.
