What exactly does Gandhi intend to tell us by stating “worship without sacrifice” as one of the seven deadly social sins? This statement can be interpreted by first taking knowledge of what these individual words define. The word worship can be seen as being and doing in passion with our highest religious, spiritual, moral beliefs or principles. Sacrifice means willingly giving, surrendering or letting go of something for the sake of something or someone. Thus, worship with sacrifice is being willing to give or give up something to live our highest religious principles. However, if these two words start falling apart from each other, the significance of worshiping will corrupt and lead to one of the many sins stated by Gandhi.
Many incidents relating to worshiping without sacrifice can be extracted from various kinds of situations. The most general idea of worshiping can be found between the relationship with God. If we go way back into the past according to the bible, God has shown many ways mankind should worship him. He has given us the Ten Commandments and disciples such as Psalm testify that we shall all rejoice the Lord with all our hearts. “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. Throughout The Awakening there are many sacrifices made by characters such as Mrs.Pontellier, Robert and many others. However the character that most deliberately sacrifices in the novel is Robert. His ultimate sacrifice portrays his deep love and care for Edna as well as many other aspects throughout the novel. In The Awakening Robert makes it evident that his ultimate sacrifices portray his most important values throughout the novel as well as the meaning of the novel as a whole.
The three parts of Joseph Marshall’s The Lakota Way that are the most important are love, sacrifice, and bravery. All three are a part of an average person’s life and are virtues people admire, worldwide. Love, the most important of the virtues, is an emotion, that is shown in unique ways; it is shared between parent and child, between spouses, and between friends. Sacrifice is an action word, that comes from within yourself, just like love, people sacrifice in unique ways. The final important virtue is bravery; bravery is a big step, it shows how much courage one has, how much strength they can put into something horrifying, hard, or somber. These are values that are a part of Lakota culture, and they are respected and practiced everyday.
In Achebe’s Novel Things Fall Apart one of the themes is that striving after titles, trophies, and status in general is rife with sacrifice – some too great to overcome. The status symbols in the novel and in the modern world are often sought after heavily. This leads to great strife amongst people and causes damage in multiple ways. One of the ways that striving for status makes one sacrifice, is that of their own personality, instead of being themselves, they feel as though they need to act a certain way to gain status. It can also cause people to sacrifice relationships to maintain their version of status and the way they perceive others think of them. The primary religious rituals of Israelite religion involved sacrifices and offerings. The ritual system within the Israelite cult evolved around gifts and offerings that were presented before Yahweh. In examining the book of Leviticus, the sacrificial system of the Israelites can be identified. It is this sacrificial system that was handed down by God through Moses that allowed the people of Israel to cross over the gap between their own weaknesses and corruption to the expectations presented by God. Sacrifices symbolized an acknowledgement of guilt and a need for divine grace and forgiveness.
Worship is about honouring the Father. Taking your sight off of yourself and setting them on God. Re-aligning your heart with God as Lord of your life. Giving Him love by praise for all He is and all He has done in. Worship is an invitation to God to do all He wants with us, as response to the Holy Trinity. It is our way of showing God we desire only Him and all He is. Worship positions us to receive and respond to the Holy Spirit moving and inviting.
Having read the Maze Runner book before watching the movie, I’ve got to say that it wasn’t what I was expecting. Sure, the movie was entertaining and engaging, with great performances, but it was nowhere near as good as James Dashner’s book! In both the Maze Runner book and the movie, sacrifice was one of the major themes revolving around the story, as Thomas, Alby and Chuck showed their bravery and risked their lives in order to save someone else.
Sacrifice by fire. The pleading children, the debilitating elderly, and the cynical women all have the same look of fear when they hear the word “Holocaust.” Approximately six million brave Jews were brutally murdered during the dreadful era of the Holocaust. These Jews were ordinary humans who hadn’t committed a crime, hadn’t encouraged any riots and hadn’t leveled any threats. They were citizens of their home countries who had the capability of contributing several intellectual achievements to the world. In the concentration camps, they were tortured, both physically and psychologically, starved, beaten, forced to live like animals and literally worked to death.
People have to give praise to the ruler of the land, which was proved in these two passages. In the Hymn they worshipped the sun and in Genesis they worshiped God. Even in modern times, people still worship the sun and God. Many cultures and regions have their own form of god that they worship, which is essential in maintaining a solid spirit. As a worshipper, people find peace and happiness from worshipping their god. In The Hymn, they found energy and positivity when worshipping the sun. Gandhi is referring to nonviolent actions as bargaining chips, and as an alternative to political violence. Gandhi might have said this during his nonviolent approach to challenge the legitimacy and the status quo of the British rule of India subcontinent. Gandhi’s nonviolent movement, from the onset, was ignored and mocked. But when the British realized that Gandhi’s message was piercing the heart and mind of the larger Indian population, the British ultimately realized the threat Gandhi’s nonviolent movement posed. Realizing that they cannot continue to ignore Gandhi and his movement anymore, the British resorted to violence, this made Gandhi’s self-rule move materialized faster than anticipated. Gandhi’s use of nonviolence and the British use of violence to clamp down on the nonviolent demonstrators created loopholes, leading to victory for Gandhi and his movement.
“Human beings are made for worship. Everyone worships someone or something” (Calhoun 2005). The above statement is so true. Some people worship money, themselves, other people or pagan Gods. As for me I worship God the Almighty Father of Heaven and Earth. “True worship of God happens when we put God first in our lives” (Calhoun 2005). Worship isn’t just singing at the beginning of a church service on Sunday. Worship is a daily surrender where we put God first in everything such as our marriage, work life, friendships, family, money, and lifestyle. Worship is where we totally surrender and trust God with everything in our lives.
The definition of Worship is complex and intricate ideology which is not wast to define; the word “worship”. To fully understand this dynamic platform it is important to understand the root words which compose this commonly used word; the Anglo-Saxon definition of this multi-faceted word can be broken down as “weorthscipe”, being defined as “worth” and “ship”. After the root can be broken down and discovering what it mean, to give something worth, it is simple to participate in.
The Lord yearns for his people’s full devotion, so he could give all he has to offer in return. He cries out “if my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes” (Psalm 81:13-14)! A simple definition of sacrifice is to give up something for the sake of something else, whether it is for another human life, for an idea, or even for a belief. “She was 17 years old. He stood glaring at her, his weapon before her face. ‘Do you believe in God?’ She paused. It was a life-or-death question. ‘Yes, I believe in God.’ ‘Why?’ asked her executioner. But he never gave her the chance to respond. The teenage girl lay dead at his feet.” (DC Talk 17) This example of a sacrifice really happened at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, on April 20, 1999. In the story Iphigenia and in today’s society, justification can be found in favor of the sacrifice of life for the lives of others, for the sake of one’s country, and for one’s religious beliefs.
It used to be, that the wife was the designated house maker, and the husband would go work to work the day shift and make all the money. The wife would then take care of the kids and raise them and look after them while the father was away. Since then many things have changed. Women can get jobs easier now and make just as much or more money than men, so the problem arises what to do with the children while the parents are out. There are some fathers who stay at home and look after them even though this is not typical. Some parents ship their kids off to daycare, and leave the responsibility to some one else. Then some parents go to the extent of home schooling their kids. Some where in between these extremes there has to be a prosperous medium.
...and, yet in generalizing, Gandhi only succeeds in weakening his case against Western Civilization. For it is impossible for such sins to be totally non-exist in India, even before direct English influence, and therefore forces the two nations to be equal in this respect. Gandhi is placing India on too high a pedestal to claim credence.
