William Shakespeare is considered to be the most influential English writer in the literary world, who is also called playwright, dramatist and poet. In Shakespeare’s early plays, they were more written in the traditional and conventional style. However Shakespeare was always innovative and tried to attempt to adapt the traditional style to his own purposes (“William Shakespeare Biography”). From some classics such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and Richard II written in the late 16 century, we can find that Shakespeare’s writing style gradually developed and changed from the traditional form to a more self-expressive style. The Soliloquy or monologue was also a common device that Shakespeare used to tell his stories, and this soliloquy served to reveal the character’s thoughts. For example, there is a well-known sentence monologue in the play “Hamlet”, “To be or not to be, that is a question.” We seem to be brought into the protagonist’ mind and feel much clearer about the setting and plot. After completing Hamlet, Shakespeare adopted a more centered, swift, distinct, and non-repetitive writing style. Run-on lines, uneven pauses and stops were used in sentence length and structure (“The Writing Style of William Shakespeare”). Additionally, Shakespeare’s writing style improved gradually with the change of time and society.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford on Avon, England, in April of 1564 to Mary and John Shakespeare. He was the third child and the eldest son. His father was a tanner, glove-maker, and trader in wool and other precious commodities. William attended the Stratford Grammar school where he studied and received substantial training in Latin. He was married on November 27, 1582, to a woman named Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than he was. In May of 1583, the couple's first daughter, Susanna was born. The couple had twins in February of 1585, Hamnet and Judith. Throughout his life, Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays, and several poems and sonnets. He was also an actor for a short while. Several of Shakespears plays were performed at the famous Globe Theater in England. On April 23, 1616 Shakespeare died, he was buried at the church of Stratford on April 25, 1616.

When an author is able to seize the attention of any partaking of their work, curiosity will develop which will lead to the wonder of what the conclusion my bring about. Not only is it important to snatch the audience’s attention in the beginning, it is necessary to hold it prisoner throughout the tale. Authors do this by having an interesting plot development in which many unexpected details come into play and the course of the story is thrown from the norm and into the conflict. Shakespeare was a master of this art in the work he produced throughout his life and was able to create stories of humor and those of tragedy. For example, his play King Lear is a terrible tragedy in which many awful things take place and the story ends by disastrous means. While in the play Much Ado About Nothing, very little conflict is present and if it is, it is resolved quickly and the play concludes with the joyfulness of marriage nuptials.
