The reason Jefferson’s penning of the Declaration of Independence became so controversial is because of his actions. At the time he wrote the Declaration he owned about 200 slaves. So when he added the words “All men are created equal” he was only taking about white men. Another issue is he expressed mixed feeling about blacks and slavery, but his actions and words again showed he supported the belief of white superiority. He also had an intimate relationship with one of his slaves leading to him fathering at least one if not more of her children. The mass media is connected to prejudice in the United States because it has an undeniable influence on how individuals think, what they believe, and how they function in society. The media effects how individuals perceive certain races. Usually the media is geared towards whites and unless they change gears towards a non-white market the majority of the images will be white. To be frank I think the entire first Document of the Declaration of Independence is extremely hypocritical. Nowhere stated in the excerpt, were slaves pointed out, but instead “all Men”. Does this “all men” include those of color as well, and not just whites? This document alone is hard evidence of why many believe Jefferson as being pro-slavery. On the other hand, Jefferson was entitled to have slaves, because that is pretty much what everyone practiced during this time. Yes, he knew slavery was complete and utterly wrong, but slavery was also popular among rich white men. Our Declaration of Independence, was penned most notably by Thomas Jefferson in response to the atrocities committed by the British Crown against the citizens of the American Colonies.
