I don’t like to wear dresses no matter in what kind of situation, but I tried my best to wear a dress for this gender performance activity. There was nothing especially happened that made me uncomfortable, however, I did not feel like being myself as I was dressing in that way. After having this special experience, I gained some kind of empathy toward those who perform their gender by dressing different than their opposite biological sex.
Since I could not think of any clothing I have that can help me to dress more masculine, I chose to dress more feminine than I usually dress. On the day of the gender performance activity, I wore a black dress with a black trench coat. I also wore a necklace and earrings, but they might not be too noticeable because I did not tie up my hair. I think my outfit was more toward the formal dressing for female since it was all black and plain. I did not use the backpack for normal school days because that would not go well with my dress. The one I used was a dark purple crossbody purse which was not big enough to put my notebook. That was why I also had to carry a binder around.

I did not meet many people in the morning, so I did not notice any difference. My first class of the day was an English class, and after I walked into the classroom, my Chinese friends looked at me surprised. The first thing they asked was “are we having our presentation today?” I replied them that I dressed up for the activity in another class. Each gender has its little tells and associations, the movie Victor Victoria depicts gender cues very accurately and well. Victor Victoria is a movie about a woman, who wants to have a successful singing career, but in order to do so she must pretend to be a man pretending to be a woman. This movie takes place in the 1930’s in Paris, France during the winter time. One gender cue I noticed was how women and men wore their coats differently. Men tended to wear their coats over their shoulders without putting their arms in the sleeves and women, wore their coats a help their coats together with their hand placed close to their chest, indicating they feel cold. If you were to ask a child or teen what they thought about school, they would probably say that they dislike school for a multitude of reasons, two of them being: a misogynistic dress code and the stress of balancing schoolwork with the expectations of society. The American educational system is inadequate compared to countries like Finland in which the dress code is nonexistent and the curriculum is more flexible to human needs; it is imperative that we come together to assure Dr. Anna Hinton, director of innovation and improvement, that she can enhance the broken educational system.
In Zhou, Li’s article “The Sexism of School Dress Codes,” she explains how the dress codes are diminishing children's self-esteem and, is mostly sexist towards girls as well as the LGBT community. To reach a wide audience including students, parents, and high school administrators, she relies on a wide variety of sources from high school students to highly credited professors. Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.

Depending on the gender the person identifies, as there is an expectation of how that person should look and act. Social Construction of Gender is a process, stratification system and structure. The day to day interactions emphasize gender as opposites. Take for instance, conversations, formalities of daily life, sayings, and so on. The social construction of gender is created through social interaction – through the things we do and say with other people. This means that gender it is not a fixed or inherent fact, but instead it varies across time and place.
When a person hears words like feminist or feminism, notions of what it means to be feminine, or consequently unfeminine, begin to dimly form in our mind’s eye. Although we cannot definitively answer the question of what is feminine, we are able to recognize it when we see it or its absence. This conception, however, is arbitrary at best. What is it about an evening gown that seems to define and dress the feminine aura while a woman spitting would be denounced as inherently unfeminine?
