Why to Get Vaccinated For a lot of people in today’s world the decision to get vaccinated either for themselves or for their children, is a very difficult decision. It may be difficult because they have questions and concerns that have never been properly addressed. These people may be scared of the obvious, like a fear of needles or unwanted side effects from whichever vaccine they’re receiving. Having all of these negative thoughts already in your mind can make it difficult to decide whether or not getting vaccinated is your best option. However, studies have shown that the benefits of getting vaccinated greatly outweigh the risks. When you get vaccinated, you are not only protecting yourself but also the ones around you. If you have a less likely chance of getting an illness, you have a greater chance of not spreading it to the ones around you. When you get a vaccine it gives you a little bit of that certain disease. “White blood cells activate and begin making proteins called antibodies that locate the infectious agent and create a counteroffensive” (M. Fisher 13). This helps your body to fight off the specific disease. “In other words, vaccines work by creating the same biological reaction you would get from the disease without actually forcing you to get sick along the way” (Herlihy and Hagood 21). So basically, you can produce antibodies by either getting a vaccine for the disease or by getting the disease. Either way you will not get the disease a second... ... middle of paper ... ...imated that vaccinations given from 2001 to 2010 saved over $83 billion in treatment and other related costs (Mintzer and Hagood 138). It’s better to pay the morsel of money now for a vaccine than paying much more later in medical bills. It’s understandable to have you fair amount of concerns when making the decision of whether or not to get you or your child vaccinated. Although, as you can see the benefits of getting vaccinated greatly outweigh the risks. These vaccines help to protect you, your family, and everyone you come in contact with. They are proven to be safe for the public by many healthcare professionals before ever reaching your doctors office. And you are saving money in the long run by not getting too sick to have to miss work and have multiple doctors’ visits. As you can see there are much more positive aspects to getting vaccinated than negative.
