Image you got on the most talked about ship ever built in the 1900’s, The Titanic, thinking it was going to be all fine and dandy because it was unsinkable. The RMS Titanic was the largest passenger ship the world has ever seen in the early 20th century and was also unsinkable. “The sounds of people drowning are something that I cannot describe to you, and neither can anyone else. It was the most dreadful sound and there is a terrible silence that follows it,” Eva Hart, Survivor of The Titanic. Even though the ship took almost 3 years to build, life aboard was great until the night Titanic struck an iceberg. The Construction Building The Titanic was a long, hard process that took about twenty-six months. The ship was constructed of 882 feet and 9 inches and could have held 3,547 …show more content…
One night, things took the wrong turn. On April 15, 1912 , in the early hours, The Titanic was in the Northern Atlantic Ocean when suddenly it struck an iceberg. Just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, the iceberg ripped a tear in the hull of the ship causing tons of water to rush in. Once the crew announced what had happened, the passengers went chaotic. Everyone was screaming and trying to stay safe. Now, since The Titanic was supposed to be “unsinkable”, they had only put twenty lifeboats on the ship. The crew was trying to maintain everyone, but it was not happening. The crew had decided to let women and children on the lifeboats first. But, they were not even filling up half the boats. They had let First and Second class get on the lifeboats first, so that led to many Third class lives lost. As the ship started to sink more, the tilt of it became more apparent, causing more passengers to panic, but Captain Smith remained with the same orders , ‘Women and Children first”. At 2:20 in the morning, The Titanic took it’s final plunge into the cold water, leaving more than 1,500 lost their lives in the
In 1909, construction on the beauty of the seas began. The titanic took 3 years to build. It was built in Belfast, North Ireland. It was built by Harland and Wolff. 250 workers got injured or died during the making of the beautiful, huge, 52,310 tons, Titanic.
First of all the Titanic was uniqely built. The Titanic was built by the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff. It was made out of 2,000 steel plates and three million rivets. The chief designer of the Titanic was Thomas Andrews. It was built in Belfast, North Ireland. It took over three years to build the Titanic. The Titanic sank in under three hours. It was the largest passenger ship built. There was 250 workers injured while working on the ship. The ship was 25 stories high and it weighed 46,000 tons. The anchor was over 18 feet long and weighed over 15 tons. www.historyofthetitanic.org
Often when we think about the Titanic the first thought that comes to the mind is the film “Titanic” which was produced in 1997, 85 years after the disaster struck. It starred Kate Winslett (Rose DeWitt Bukater), Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) And Billy Zane (Cal Hokley) as the main characters. The film is about a love triangle between the three main characters. This movie was produced by James Cameron who put enormous amount of research about the shipwreck of the titanic in order to depict the turn of events in his film. Amongst the purposes of his research he wanted to accurately depict the ship wreck itself from the very instant the ship hit the iceberg to the very last part of the ship that was subdued into the water. Another very significant part of Cameron’s research was to understand the socio-economic status of the passengers which will be discussed in detail later. Although historians have criticized certain aspects Cameron’s film the accuracy in which he depicts certain aspects such as the socio-economics of the passengers can’t be ignored.
The titanic was a ship that was huge and extremely advanced. The ship took 3 years to be completed and over 3, 000 people worked on it. Although the final product could not be fully used it was a well built ship. This ship was well equipped with the best and
The R.M.S. (Royal Mail Steamer) Titanic was the second of three superliners constructed by White Star Line to cross the Atlantic. The superliner measured 882 feet in length, it was longer than the tallest skyscraper in New York, at the time, and the rudder alone was heavier than Christopher Columbus’s Santa Maria. The Titanic was built of 20 thousand tons of steel and iron. When the Titanic was built in 1912 it cost White Star Line $7.5 million dollars. Courier Mail, The (Brisbane). 04/03/2012, p38-38. 1.
Statistical data shows that rescued passengers and survival rates were very different for categories of passengers depending on their material and social status and directly reflected on the latter. Lower class passengers had very few chances of survival, whether they were male, female, or children. These facts reveal the power of social stratification in society of the period and demonstrate how social injustice strongly affects the issues of life and death of the people. The history of the Titanic highlights some of the most sensitive issues of social justice and social stratification that should be studied in more detail and cannot be overshadowed by the popular stories that level or underestimate the social and historical importance of the messages this disaster left to posterity.
"We are all going to die!" That is what 1500 people were thinking when the Titanic was going down, and they were right. The Titanic was the biggest ship in the world at the time. The Titanic hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and over 1500 lives were lost to the deep Atlantic. The person responsible was J. Bruce Ismay. Ismay left the ship with woman and children still on board when he could of saved other people, he ultimately decided for the Titanic to only have 20 lifeboats, and Ismay owned the company that made and designed the Titanic and all of its flaws.
We have all heard about the Titanic. Either we have watched the romance movie or done our research in a different way. No matter where we get our information from we know the biggest parts of the tragedy. The ship Titanic crashed into an iceberg on a cold April night on the Atlantic Ocean while sailing its first trip. But haven’t you ever wanted to know more details about? Maybe how the people who were on it and survived? How could the situation be prevented? Couldn’t they have saved more people? Well in the book “A Night to Remember” it has details on the Titanic you have probably never thought of knowing. While reading the first chapter some parts really caught my attention. One was when people felt the jolt from the collision with the ice berg people didn’t suspect what tragedy was to come. A girl named Marguerite Frolicher, who was accompanying her father on a business trip, woke up with a jump since she was half asleep she was thinking about ‘little white lake ferries’ landing sloppily which made her laugh and thought to herself “Isn’t it funny…we’re landing!”. They really did...
The ship, R.M.S Titanic, has been popular several different times in a little over 100 years. The first time in April 1912 when it first sailed for North America. This great ship was said to be unsinkable. Many errors led to the major tragedy of the Titanic, including the life boats were not all there or filled as much as they should have been, the ship tried to go full speed to break the iceberg, and the Californian ship did not respond the Carpathia had saved the rest.
On April 30, 1907, an idea was born out of the minds of Bruce Ismay and William James Pirrie to build an unsinkable ship: the Titanic. A company, Harland and Wolff, out of Belfast, Ireland were commissioned to build this miraculous ship (United States). The company made quick work, and within a few days short of five years, the Titanic was then ready to set sail from its location in Belfast to Southampton, England. On April 10, 1912, the Titanic left for Southampton and arrived within the next 24 hours. There were 2,223 passengers consisting of immigrants to millionaires on board preparing to set sail for New York hoping to find their way to a better life (United States). The Titanic gave many people a chance to start a new life in America,
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 a.m. after striking an iceberg, with the loss of more than 1, 500 passengers and crew. Thomas Andrews knew the ship’s flaws when he designed her nevertheless, Captain Smith knew of the collision between the ship and the iceberg. However, left all faith in the “Unsinkable Titanic.”
The Unsinkable Ship That Sank On the day of April 12,1912, Titanic was thought to be the dream ship that could never be destroyed. Like today’s society, the passengers were enjoying the time of their lives and thought nothing could ever happen to them because everybody thinks it’s the “unsinkable” ship, or at least that’s what everyone knew it to be. White Star Line’s Titanic was called the “Ship of dreams”. As they loaded up, many passengers of different classes and sectors of society thought that, that was the ticket to their dreams. But as time pass by from enjoying too much, little do they know that the ship is sinking.
Lack of sufficient lifeboats could not prevent other difficulties that took place on the ship. Two problems that happened was a smoldering fire broke out in one of the ships coal bunkers and the breakdown of the Titanic's wireless system (Discovery.com). Edward J. Smith was the captain of the Titanic. Some might question his ability to command a voyage after fining out how Smith disregarded many ice warnings.
Thomas Andrews was the designer of the Titanic and its sister ships. His original designs of the ships was to have a double hull ship, 46 lifeboats and have the watertight bulkheads go all the way up to B deck. While he was on the ship inspecting it, he had written down notes to improve the ship. His designs were either vetoed or removed in the ship building process. One reason on why his original design were vetoed or removed because of money. If Andrews’s designs were not vetoed or removed, the Titanic would probably have been able to withstand the crash with iceberg and there would not be a design error. Since they had not followed the original design the ship was not a double hull ship, only had 20 life boats that did not suffice the amount of people on the ship and all the watertight bulkheads did not go all the way up to B deck. When the Titanic had hit the iceberg, water immediately started to flood the ship and would slowly pass the water line that was made after the original design. Once the water passed those water lines and started to fill into the other compartments the ship only had a few hours left to stay afloat. The water filled into the other water compartments like falling dominos and would continue until the ship was filled with water and break into two pieces. If the ship was, double hulled and the water line went all the way to B deck; the ship would either kept going or be able to stay
