In his short story, “The Things They Carried”, Tim O’Brien narrates the events that surround seventeen American soldiers and their struggle to survive in the hostility of the jungles in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. As a Vietnam War veteran himself, O’Brien obscures the line between fiction and non-fiction as he incorporates some of his own experiences during his service in Vietnam as well as made up events to create a collection of short stories that occur during this era. Although O’Brien is the narrator and a character in most of his war stories, this particular story is told through an omniscient point of view and focuses on the Lieutenant of the seventeen-man platoon, Jimmy Cross and his constant focus on a girl that he loves. O’Brien begins the story describing Jimmy Cross’ love for Martha and how he carried photographs and letters from her. This shows how young and unprepared he is to lead a platoon since his mind is focused on love during crucial times of survival. The narrator also mentions that Ted Lavender carried tranquilizers and marijuana to relieve his stress since he was always scared of what might happen. Kiowa was described by the narrator as very religious by revealing that he carried the bible with him wherever he went. Several more men were characterized by the narrator through the same method. O’Brien used his experience fighting in Vietnam to tell the truth about the dreadfulness of war through an unorthodoxly method such as simply listing items that can explain a journey surprisingly well. He could have easily told the story directly from his perspective but he chose an alternative approach instead. He emphasized the burdens and responsibility the soldiers carried whether tangible or intangible with these lists.
