In the past only movie stars had blinding, white-teeth. Now, cosmetic dentistry has gone ordinary. Cosmetic dentistry has become a billion-dollar industry. As thousands of Americans sink their teeth into bleaching trays full of chemicals, consumers are left to wonder, Is this trend safe?
The first successful method of bleaching discolored teeth was created by Dr. James Truman in 1864. This consists substantially of liberating chlorine form chlorinated lime by the addition of a weak solution of acetic, tartaric, or oxalic acid. "One process is to saturate the entire canal and the pulp chamber with the acid before inserting the chlorinated lime: another is to dip the instrument in the weak solution of acid, and then in the lime, and pack it rapidly into the cavity; and still another is to make a paste by the used of distilled water, and pack this into the tooth and then apply a stronger acid solution by means of cotton wrapped around the point used." (UK Cosmetic Dentists) This method is repeated every two or three days until the required shade is obtained. After the desired color is obtained the tooth must be filled with some material which will by its antiseptic and coagulating qualities prevent the future decomposition.
Another method of bleaching teeth with chlorine was invented by Dr. Wright, of Richmond Va. This consisted of forcing a continuous stream of chlorine gas-previously prepared in the lab. This was very efficient and rapid in its action but the apparatus and the trouble of preparing the gas were obstacles which prevented its general adoption and it was abandoned. This invention of bleaching has came a long way from just a simple toothbrush and toothpaste for a white smile.

In White Teeth, Zadie Smith warns against the dangers of purism and letting cultural background completely shape one’s identity while simultaneously paying tribute to the rich heritage and beliefs of her characters. It is a cautionary tale for immigrants but is never dismissive of their past. Smith is merely advising against tunnel vision and stressing the need to adapt to one’s environment. She shows the beauty that can stem from adaptation while warning that an inability to do so will lead to one’s downfall. London plays an especially important role as the battleground where the past and the present clash; a melting pot with a large immigrant population and inevitable moral struggle.
Dental carries is one of the most common oral diseases in the world, and it often goes untreated due to the expense of treatment. Ethnic minorities, the poor, the elderly, and those who are mentally and/or physically disabled are other disparities who also suffer from untreated dental caries (Alcorn & Rogo; 2012). Hygienist are the dentists who educate their patients on the importance of oral health care. Hygienist examine any chipped tooth, damage filling, discolored or swollen gums, and also take x-rays, and help prevent tooth decay. Today, dental care focuses on prevention. Preventing tooth decay and related problems is the main job of a dental hygienist. As generations pass, not many people are fully aware of the downside of not properly taking care of their pearly whites. This topic was brought to my attention by noticing the lack of dental hygiene among my peers. This doesn’t necessarily just mean having only cavities, sore gums, but also bad breath.

Abnormal wear of tooth surfaces was an orthodontic problem early on, even ancient people wanted straight teeth! To close gaps, it has been construed that catgut did the work now done by today’s orthodontic wire. In 400-500 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle both ruminated about ways to level teeth and fix many dental conditions. It should be noted that in Medieval times, expert barbers often performed dental “operations”, extractions, and procedures such as blood-letting. In seventeen twenty-eight, French Dentist Pierre Fauchard published a book called “The Surgeon Dentist” about ways to straighten and align teeth. He used a device called a “Bandeau,” a horse-shaped piece of precious metal which helped...
