I believe the greatest advancement in the communications technology industry in the last decade is targeted advertising. Targeted advertising is used by many websites and online advertising companies, due to the interactive, highly flexible media of the internet. This occurs when a website shows ads to viewers that are meant to be relevant to the viewer in question. This is a considerable advancement because it happens to be beneficial to all parties involved and is stronger and has increased effectiveness over conventional advertising.

Noticing ads for products that the viewer may be interested in continues to be good for the reason that the viewer may find a product they require that relates to their grouping. Not observing ads for products the viewer has no interest in also happens to be convenient, as the viewer will feel as if they are wasting less time looking at advertisements irrelevant to themselves. Additionally, people frequently find themselves frustrated, bored, or angry with online advertisements. It often comes off as crude and clumsy, even with advances in technology, psychology, and design. However, targeted advertisement can be effective for selling products. Targeting ads removes the aspect of advertisement that causes it to be inefficient: disinterest. The majority of people who notice a fixed ad will not be interested in what the advertiser tries to sell. On the contrary, every person who sees a targeted ad will at least be somewhat interested in it. By pursuing specific groups, companies can reach a larger target audience, as opposed to placing a fixed ad and hoping that anyone interested will notice

Every time you click a link, fill out a form or visit a website, advertisers are working to collect personal information about you, says Joseph Turow, a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Then they target ads to you based on that information they collected. This tracking is ubiquitous across the Internet, from search engines to online retailers and even greeting card companies.

These images often do more then simply try to persuade us to buy a particular product or use a particular service. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising refers to one of the marketing strategies in a pharmaceutical industry. As pharmaceutical products directly affect people's lives and health, many industrialized countries ban DTC advertisements; the United States and New Zealand are the only industrialized countries that allow DTC advertising of prescription medicines. However, there is a controversy over whether DTC advertising, as one of the most effective forms of mass communication, should be more regulated than it is now. This debate is ongoing. This research argument, however, contends that people need stronger regulations against many DTC advertisements in the pharmaceutical industry because they are usually manipulative and misleading to people.
