From cell phones, computers, to tablets, technology is everywhere; it’s nearly impossible to avoid it in this day and age. Consequently, “screen addiction,” or obsessive use of technology, is something anyone can develop. However, teenagers are victim of being accused as the most susceptible to developing such an obsession. Technology is such a big part of our modern lives, and it connects us to a variety of great things; therefore, teenage “screen addiction” should not be a concern. Technology helps to carry out tasks and makes our lives so much more easier than they would’ve been if we didn’t have access to it. No internet is practically synonymous with isolation. Without internet, we cannot “log in” and connect with others, close or far away. Without internet, we cannot go online and check the daily news. Without internet, keeping in touch with the world is impossible. I remember my last family trip, which was to India. There, we only had internet access a handful of days. The remainder of the time, we were left to only guess what could be going on back home or in the rest of the world. After that trip, I really started to appreciate always having a reliable wifi signal. Now, apply this to the rest of society: could we really survive without internet access? No, we definitely wouldn’t, and teens definitely wouldn’t be the only ones suffering. This may be true in some cases. For example, yesterday at lunch, my phone and Chromebook both died, leaving me without anything to do for the next hour. Just having to sit there and observe the people around me helped me to notice a couple of things I haven’t before, one of them being just how many people were absorbed in their phones or Chromebooks. I couldn’t even talk very much with the people I sit with because they all just happened to be on theirs as well. Not only did this lead to a very boring lunch, it helped me realize something: teenagers do use their phones a lot. However, it was what they do on their phones that makes up for it. Us teens do not hate all social interactions; in fact, we live for social interaction. That’s why social media sites exist. Sure, my friends and I do not always talk much at lunch, yet we still keep in touch with each other via text, Snapchat, Instagram or any other social media platform we might use. This sort of interaction is also applicable to many adults who are just as obsessed with social media today. We might not talk face-to-face as much as we used to, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t
