Many people and critics feel some law enforcement officers use excessive force while arresting or detaining suspects. Since 2012 and the emergence of social media, as well as camera phones have been giving law enforcement officers a negative reputation in regards to how they arrest people. Some will say that police are racially bias, need more training and others may say that suspects should just comply and do what is asked of them by law enforcement officers. Did this type of behavior recently start or has it been going on? Technology and social media has opened the world’s eyes, because citizens record some of these acts and put them on social media outlets for everyone to see. What can police agencies and the community do to reduce or eliminate this type of wrong doing? There will be a reference to a case where a police officer has been found guilty of excessive force as well as a case where they were acquitted. Let’s first go back in time and discuss where police officers actually originated from as well as their training and tactics while making arrest.
The first police force was formed back in London back in 1829. It was a 1000 man force that was ran by two commissioners. The police force was created and mandated to do four things: prevent crime, maintain public order, reduce conflict, and to show efficiency through the absence of crime. In 1845, New York City was the first city in the United States to establish a fully functional paid police force. Other major cities soon followed in the footsteps of New York. The police only carried batons when they were first created, but as the technology changed with the times, so did their tactics and weaponry. (Cole, Smith, & DeJong, 2015, p.178-181).

...ionals and just people in general that are here to help us. We as a civilization just need to reach out and open ourselves for help and self-growth.
In conclusion, excessive force by law enforcement officers can be reduced and eliminated. The first step of the process is a strong and vigorous screening process by the police department’s psychologist. The next step would be to ensure that all police departments mandate a special program for all officers involved in shootings to ensure the officers get the help they need. They should also have those officers periodically evaluated in case they have issues later down the road. Last, but not least the entire police department should have a positive posture in regards to their excessive force policies. They need to know that any officer caught using excessive force will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
