Embarrassed, ridiculed and picked on are just a few examples of different feelings social media can cause someone to feel. The impact and power it can have on an individual can leave a negative permanent mark. In the column “Social Networks Bring Us Closer to Isolation”, written by Sandy Banks suggests social media, the internet and technology have changed the way people interact as a society and with each other in negative ways which may have contributed to Tyler Clementi’s suicide. Banks shared a story she read on how a freshman college student, Clementi, committed suicide due to cyberbullying committed by his roommates Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. Banks believes social media and technology play an important role in people’s lives most especially in a negative manner. It has become clear to me that social media and technology does affect us negatively in so many ways because it can create an isolated environment and promote cyberbullying, anonymity and lack of social interaction. Because of this, untruths can be disseminated widely.
While social media and technology can create, provoke and facilitate cyberbullying, it is, at times, difficult to know how to stop or control the …show more content…

When we use social media and technology correctly to better ourselves, it then shows that people can have control over social media and empowerment over technology. For example, when using technology for educational purposes and social media to keep in touch with families and friends who are away from us, we then create and promote a positive environment not just for us but for other people that may be observing what we are doing. Most importantly, we are contributing to our society in a positive manner leaving a good permanent mark on people; That is one permanent mark worth not taking
