Media is everywhere. Our society is so used to this environment that we believe almost all the advertisements we see is true, but are all these ads 100% truthful or are they hiding something? The media is full of twisted words,lies,and digitally altered images. These strategies are used to make the product seem appealing. One of the most affective strategy in ads is stereotyping. The models in ads are digitally altered. Woman are stereotyped as beautiful,skinny,and flawless. Men are stereotyped as handsome,manly,and successful. Both genders are photo shopped to “perfection.” Though these models are just in ads but are they affecting us as a society?

Media is different forms of communication, such as radio, newspapers, and television, that are directed to mass audiences. Kilbourne’s presentation explores how media, specifically advertisements, have unrealistic and unhealthy perceptions of beauty, perfection and sexuality.
The media has several different aspects and tactics that impact gender roles. It has a way of impacting the emotions of men and women alike, as well as their view on their own gender and the roles they should carry out for the rest of their lives. By aiming toward emotions and personal feelings, the media is able to affect their being in a way that no other source of influence can.

As civilization grows and the tentacles of mass media stretch into mankind’s mind from every direction, it is important to note the damaging effects of the images being shown to the masses. In a society where the model being used to sell products to the consumer is on average 20% thinner than the demographic of the consumers themselves (Abraham 3), it’s impossible to ignore the influence these marketing campaigns have on individual psyches. Dominant and submissive stereotypes in advertising aren't only harmful to women, but men as well, as Sam Femiano and Mark Nickerson (Physiotherapists from the Centre for Media Literacy) explain “They are damaging because they narrow our notions of what men can be and do. They affect women's expectations of men in relationships and men's expectations of other men in work settings or in friendships. Media stereotypes have extra impact because they create images based on these assumptions, helping to shape men's own views about how they should act and how successful they are as men.” (CML, 2012)

The image that the media has created of women through advertisements, magazines and movies, has significant affects on how the public views women. The mass media has created a specific look for women to have by portraying that women should look young, be slim, have flawless skins and meet all the beauty components of the society (Davtyan-Gevorgyan 2016). The women in the media are used in association with household or sex objects and will lack important roles (Ibid). In advertisements, women are more likely to be have specific roles to gain the audiences attention, such as: laying down sexually and touching themselves or the products (D’Enbeau 2011, 55). However, majority of the ads also restrict women to home, show them as dependent on men and use them as sex objects (Ibid).
Throughout society, men and women have been expected to live by guidelines consisting of media generated ideas and ways of living out life. Both men and women’s thinking process are being altered the negative effects of society’s mass media. For both sexes, this repeating negative exposure causes a constant downfall in self-image and creates media influenced decisions that lead to unhealthy lifestyles. Research indicates that bias in media articles leads to minorities and women being portrayed in a stereotypical or harsh manner (Hazell and Clarke 3). This leads to African Americans being seen as individuals fit for “lower status occupations,” (Hazel and Clark 7). Black men were also seen as hostile, intimidating figures mainly working as athletes or musicians while women were portrayed as domineering, overly expressive people (Hazel and Clark 9).
