The South vs The South book review
The purpose of this book is to tell us what happened in The Civil war era. The theme of the book is to teach about slavery. In addition, it talks about how slaves were treated. The civil war started April 12, 1861 and ended May 9, 1865. Abraham Lincoln thought slavery was wrong and worked hard to liberate the slaves.
The author is mostly talking about the slaves, and that they were abused or persecuted. The slaves tried to run away, to live freely. The owners were not going to be a problem, it was the slave patrolmen because they would catch the slaves and sale them or kill them. The owners used the slaves to help work the cotton gin and to working the fields picking cotton. “One eve of the civil war, when slaves made up only 12.7 percent of its population, the Border south grew almost none of the south’s cotton, sugar, and rice.” (Freehling p19) “Allegedly, only blacks could perform so-called nigger work under the brutal southern sun.”(Freehling p21) Once the civil war was over it was getting closer to freeing the slaves.
