The purpose of this book is to tell us what happened in The Civil war era. The theme of the book is to teach about slavery. In addition, it talks about how slaves were treated. The civil war started April 12, 1861 and ended May 9, 1865. Abraham Lincoln thought slavery was wrong and worked hard to liberate the slaves.
The author is mostly talking about the slaves, and that they were abused or persecuted. The slaves tried to run away, to live freely. The owners were not going to be a problem, it was the slave patrolmen because they would catch the slaves and sale them or kill them. The owners used the slaves to help work the cotton gin and to working the fields picking cotton. “One eve of the civil war, when slaves made up only 12.7 percent of its population, the Border south grew almost none of the south’s cotton, sugar, and rice.” (Freehling p19) “Allegedly, only blacks could perform so-called nigger work under the brutal southern sun.”(Freehling p21) Once the civil war was over it was getting closer to freeing the slaves.

The author goes on to describe antebellum slavery. During this time he describes slavery as a massive expansion. He expresses this knowledge through numbers of slaves and overwhelming facts. At this time cotton boosted the economy of all the slave states, cotton producing or not. Cotton created an intense demand for slave labor and therefore slave prices rose to an all time high. Slave trading was very traumatic for the slaves, being separated from the only thing they knew. Some lived on plantations under a watchful eye and others worked right beside their owners. Slaves on large plantations usually worked in gangs, and there were better positions to work then others. Some gangs were separated into groups of lighter work, consisting of men and woman. Other gangs weren't so lucky and were assigned to hard labor.

Most people believe that it was over slavery when in fact it started over state’s rights and taxes. There is documentation that proves this for instance when Abraham said, “I have no purpose, directly, or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists.” He even used African Americans as spies or contrabands - confiscated enemy property to help him in the war. You see, "property" was still attached to them. Eventually, slavery’ became a more central part of the war. That’s when Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1869, but the Confederacy was unaffected, making it more difficult for slaves in the Confederacy to be free. At this point, many history books begin to falter. They forget to mention that the slaves had a prominent role in their freedom, not just by Lincoln. They had to make an extremely complicated decision: to either leave for the Union states, risk getting caught, and severely punished or stay and still be property. The war all started because of rigid differences between the freemen and the slave states over the power of the national government to ban slavery in the regions that had not became states yet. The American Civil War was the biggest and by far the most vicious battle in the Western world between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the beginning of World War I in 1914. Northern victory was the war that preserved the United States as one nation and broken the foundation of slavery that had separated the country from its beginning (James McPherson, 2013).
