Solomon Northup, a free black man who was an educated and with a family who likes to play violin in places that he can make money from. To offer his family a better life he is given an offer to go to Washington with Hamilton and Brown to play the violin. His story talks about how he goes from a free man to a drugged and beaten down runway Georgia slave for 12 years working as a slave from one master to the next. The author of this story is telling the readers to abolish slavery based on his life experience as free black man to a runaway Georgia slave. This book shows a vivid picture about a life of a free black man succumbed to slavery. At the end Henry Northup will help save him from captivity by traveling south to get him out of slave hood. Hamilton and Brown trap Solomon Northup by saying that he will get a lot of money if he comes to Washington with them. When reaching Washington, they have a gathering where they poison his drink and after waking up, he is in chains and recounts what had happened to him. A man named Burch approaches Solomon since he had woken up and tells him that he is a runaway Georgia slave, but Solomon says he is a free man. This has gone on for hours until he finally submits to Burch the slave leader until he meets someone he can trust to get him out of the slave life. There have been many masters in Solomon’s 12 years of servitude. The way the slaves were sold is by how fit they are. For instance, an elderly man was going to buy Solomon for a fair amount of price but the ringleader Burch said since he is fit he is worth more and in the end he did not buy Solomon. Solomon’s abuse from Epps and Tibet- and when he to inflict pain on his own kind this provides a warning to everyone about how much morality cost that slavery gives to everyone that is involved. Slaves was degraded, had to suffer torments, and robbed of any physical, spiritual, and emotional happiness. By abiding in slavery masters are degraded and have no empathy against slavery. Solomon’s religion gets criticized by one master. His belief in his family is robbed like loving someone, justice for freedom for a free man, and integrity. Although Solomon was removed from his family, betrayed, kidnapped, abused, identity theft, and tormented until submission. Yet he never lost hope because he believed one day he will be free. In this point of view, Solomon’s book is knowledgeable for showing people that there comes a time when slavery was a common daily practice, and reminder everyday of the consequence of human slavery.
