The society of ancient Rome can be described as sadistic, macho and priapic, while maintaining multiple traditions originally practiced in Greece, Roman society reflects a different way of functioning. The sexuality was not the primary aspect in the social hierarchy of Rome, but instead focused on the rank and class of the people. When it came to the women of Rome they fell victim to one of two paths, one of lower class and poverty with little rights and possessions or of upper class allowing them independence in most cases, property and a dowry. This changed when Rome became the head of the world, it’s people for the first time experiencing the laziness that luxury brings and in turn creating a new society of moral deprivation. Where this period in time was thought of as the time of indulgence and thoughtless desire there were still societal rules that must be followed in order for the elite to remain in good light. Homoeroticism is one of the societal components that the Roman people were very rigid about. Where in Greece pederasty was common practice in social and cultural traditions, this was not the case in Rome, the practice of pederasty was regarded as dirty and unlawful and therefore was on used as a cultural practice. Another societal practice that was important in Rome was the virtue of unmarried women and freeborn male citizens who have not undergone puberty yet. This was held to the high degree, where if a boy or unmarried women had sex before their time they would be considered impure and dirty. The social hierarchy of ancient Rome reflected these views of sex as a means in gaining political power where the elite upper class male possesses certain rights and powers that later allow him the personal gain of a valued wife. The value of a wife increased in this period of sex and power, now changing the responsibilities of the common housewife from domestic tasks to the responsibility of boosting the male kin’s careers behind the scenes, a useful pawn in the game of elite male politics. The growing power of women grew into their personal accounts as well at the same time trade influences luxury in Rome. This period of laziness and luxury formed the era of moral deprivation and in turn enforcing the social lows of sex within class and the negative implications of pederasty as well as homoeroticism.
