In today’s world, two of the most possible methods for people to communicate with each other between distances are social media and social networking. Both of these are a form of communication where users can interact with each other globally. According to Cardon and Marshall, it was “viewed as tools for young people, social networking sites are now mainstream tools of communication for individuals in all age groups” (Cardon & Marshall, 2015). Also, social media allows users to post content, such as photos and videos, on their profile page and to share with their friends. The definition of social media is a form of communication that allows users to create and share content with others. According to Chapin and Byrne, social networking is defined as “a phenomenon through which Internet users build virtual communities based on common interests, activities, and established friendships” (Chapin & Byrne, 2013).
The first difference between the two areas is the communication style. On social media, it involves only talking. . On social networking, it requires both talking and listening.
Another difference between social media and social networking is the goals that can be achieved by users. The ultimate goal in social networking for users is to build a network of followers and to maintain those relationships. In social media, users try to create information and interactions.

Users usually communicate with friends and others based where they work or attended school. For example, user who receives a friend request from someone who was former classmate that attended at the same university as the user.
However, social media has some disadvantages for people on how it is used. The most common thing is that social media could be a distraction to people working. This issue usually takes place in a working environment, such as an office or school facility. At schools, students usually find ways to access to social media sites. Most school districts blocked social media websites from their network.
Another disadvantage in the use of social media is catfishing. The definition of catfishing is user who disguised themselves as someone else under a different persona. Catfishes can create accounts with false information about themselves. Also, they steal profile pictures from other users and set these as their own. For example, someone is very shy about his or her self, so he or she decided to create a fake account under a different identity with information about their ideal selves.
