Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. (PewReasearch, 2013). In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process. To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework. Doing work and using a social media at the same is a huge distraction. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 and students who used social networking si... ... middle of paper ... ...orking-fact-sheet/ [Accessed: 13 Apr 2014]. 5. From the first email being composed and sent in 1971 to the creation of Facebook in 1994, online communication strategies in higher education has changed tremendously (Bennett, 2013). There are increasing social channels to reach more diverse and widespread populations, and the vast array of internet-based tools continues to grow (Cruz, 2012). Social media has evolved into networks of knowledgeable people, working across time and space to make informed decisions and solve intricate problems (Bingham & Conner, 2010). Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, blogs and forums are all examples of social media tools that provide ways to engage with other people online and form long-term or short-term relationships (Fouts, 2009). According to a study done at Hardin-Simmons University, 92 percent of colleges are using social media in concurrence with their official websites (Greenwood, 2012). In order stay abreast of the shifting demographics of students, employees, alumni and other constituencies, leaders in higher education must readjust marketing strategies and traditional communication approaches through the utilization of social media.
Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics
The use of social media has positive impacts on student’s achievements. Social media has also increased digital communication skills therefore texting, tweeting and instagramming, which are extremely vital in our modern society due to the increase dependence we have on social media and technology. Increase usage of social media also strengthens general communication skills and heightens the levels of communication through collaborative learning environments.
Asur, S., & Huberman (2010) defines social media as “a ubiquitous and important platform used for social networking and content sharing.” For much of today’s youth mobile devices and interactive social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have been ever present in their lives and critical factors in their development. The long-term consequences are yet unclear, but there is no doubt that the advent of social networking has transformed the manner in which students interact with their families and friends, as well as how they utilize established and emerging technologies to navigate the world (Correa, Hinsley, & De Zuniga,
People who are against Social media claim that social media has a lot of negative effects on students particularly their academic level. Although social media lead to the improvement in academic performance as through social media students can communicate with their teachers and colleagues who can help them in their studies, if a person wants to learn about a specific subject he or she can add people who have done masters in this field so if the person have any problem in the study he or she can ask them for their help and people on social media are very helpful. Students can also join the pages of the universities which they are planning to enter and adding their students and professors so they can inquire about the university and about its teaching techniques or whatever they want to ask about because people probably won’t turn down their request for help. Another academic benefit of social media is that social networking sites like my space, twitter and Facebook improve our writing and the English language in general as if any one posted a status on Facebook or a tweet on twitter with a spelling mistake people will probably correct it and social media also has raised the interest in short story telling which definitely develop the language a great evidence for the role of social media in the d...
First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social media does not only have an impact on the grades of students, but on their lives as well. Cyberbullying has reached an all-time high, and many students are being driven by what others say about them on social media. “49.5 percent of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7 percent actually committing bullying behavior online” (ProCon). Social media is one of many causes why people are not persevering and being successful in
“Focus on how to be social, not on how to do social.”-Joy Baer Social Media as described by google are websites and applications used for social networking. Many adolescents use Facebook, Myspace, and Instagram, twitter etc. as a form of communication without being explained the many risk factors. Over time more and more proposed threats with teens using social networks has arisen. Social media negatively impacts teens by exposing them to higher risk activities such as cyberbullying, sexting and a lack of privacy.
Social media is a necessary part of today’s society. Things that people nowadays can live without. They need and must check their social media at least once a day. These phenomena affect much on our teenagers, basically a student. Our students are constantly on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and likely many sites we’re not hip enough to know about. When used carefully, social media can be a useful tool rather than a distraction. There are a lot of site that student can use to learn. Education-based sites such as Edmodo, Edu blog, and Kid blog provide alternative social media sites for posting status updates and announcements, blogging, and microblogging. But even the commercialized sites can be useful for demonstrating social media to students. It can help connect students to information and help them generate a dialogue with their teacher and other students about a course. It can also help students and faculty build professional networks that connect them to communities. If you want to bring the “real world” into the classroom, consider integrating social media into your lessons. We all know that social media has many nightmarish stories about the use of social media by teens. Stories involving social media
Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, s...
Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has became an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media which could include shopping, research, or other personal reason like venting and status updates. Students often connect to social media because majority of students have one so they feel included. Social Media has became an addiction to many of the students who happen to have a profile to a site. They feel the need to always be connected to society. Many of these students grades have either suffered or raised due to having better connections with other students. My essay will attempt to prove that social media has been affecting the children’s education and prevents them from reaching the academic growth they need.
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
Social networking sites frequently have a negative impact on the academic performance of students. Sanzhar Nayzabekov says in her article “Negative impact of social networking sites on academic performance of students”, found on the website Academia.edu, “Despite the fact that a relatively large number of social network sites including Facebook were initially created for learning purposes, there is some evidence that most social network site users show almost no attitudes towards finding academic information” (6). In fact, the use of these social networks often results in lower grades. For example, Naizabekov also says a large amount of Facebook users check their Facebook a significant amount of times throughout the day while updating their statuses more than 5 times per day (4). With that being said, it is quite hard for a student focusing on status updates and what’s new on the social media during class period to be focused on what is being taught in class...
Students involved in activities on social media sites during the study resulted in a reduction in their focus of attention. This causes a decrease in their academic performance, and concentration to learn as well.
Some believe social networks are a waste of time; slacking in school or in jobs and can sometimes be dangerous. Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter can be one of these problems with some teenagers. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while nonusers had
