In American society, individuals use their smart phones on a daily basis to check their email, update their Facebook status, or tweet their most recent activity. Since the introduction of smart phones up to this very day, smart phones’ technology has progressed alongside human usage of these devices. Although there may be exceptions, it is difficult to find someone who does not own and use a smart phone regularly. Owning a mobile device has become a norm in today’s society. Moreover, this normalization and the excessive use of smart phones has resulted in people discussing and grappling with the implications that this use of smart phones has on society. The reoccurring argument against the use of smart phones is that smart phones provide a …show more content…
Galván’s, Rosa’s, and Golley’s research establishes that the negative effects of smart phones exist even in the slightest of circumstances (9). In Galván’s, Rosa’s, and Golley’s study, they conclude that individuals attempting to remain focused on a specific task are more distracted by a one-sided conversation they could hear someone having on a smart phone than they are distracted by a face-to-face conversation occurring elsewhere in the room …show more content…
Adolescents tended to prefer texting because it allows for more control over the social interaction (Pierce, 2009). Users had the capability and the time to think about what they want to say without the added context of the social situation (Pierce, 2009). (15) Through Graham’s research, Graham is able to prove how those with social anxiety have a higher ability to more easily communicate with other individuals. Instead of no communication at all, people with social anxiety have the means to think about their responses and execute them with a mobile device. Although smart phones can cause a serious distraction to its users, smart phones positively benefit those with social anxiety. Furthermore, smart phones allow users to build confidence in interactions because smart phones expand individuals experience with
A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
Cell phones are the epicenter of modern convenience right? True, since 1996, the percentage of Americans owning cell phones as doubled from 32 percent to 68 percent. (Luxury) Could these electronic devices that people use every day actually be hurting them in the long run? In today’s world, the answer definitely is yes. With today’s people it is all about staying up with the news and understanding minute events within the eworld of social media. However, the problem with cellular devices may be much broader than social stalking; it may also affect people’s health, the health of the environment, personal finance, and driving and learning distractions, Not only are people developing an addiction to their cellphone, using them to escape
"How dangerous could a cell phone actually be?" That is one of the many questions a person will ask themselves throughout their lifetime. Cell phones cause many distractions to humans throughout the day. Many cell phone owners find themselves checking their phones for messages and notifications even when the phone did not vibrate or ring. The overuse of cell phones will have negative effects on the mental and physical health of its users, will cause driving distractions, and will have a negative impact on the communication skills of humans.
The age group of 18-25 has grown around cell phone use and social networking, which offer no form of physical contact when communicating. Using this faceless interaction could lead to deterioration of social skills. Reading a conversation, rather than actually speaking to another person, requires less social skill (Jin, B., & Park, N., 2013). When individuals have been communicating this way for so long, it becomes a habit, resulting in people today to have cell phones present at all times; no matter where an individual is, the virtual connection to others never lost. Additionally, when using a cell phone for communication, it allows the user time to process what was read and how to respond to it, thus giving the user the feeling of control over how a conversation is going (Madell, & Muncer, 2007). Madell and Muncer also continued with an individual’s control over virtual conversations by addressing response times of the people involved. At any time, an individual can initiate a conversation or start a topic for multiple contributors, but when the participants are not physically present, the response time to the discussion can vary heavily. This, however, may not be such a detriment to the present group around the phone user. With the freedom to respond whenever possible, it allows the individuals in the virtual discussion to
Today’s society accepted phones so fast and easily, that most of the things that can harm us, are actually some of our social norms that we don’t even realize we are doing. Cell phones can have effects on the way people think and act, their interactions with people in society, and the amount information people retain from the direct result of multi-tasking. Cell phones are a very important asset to people, and good resources of information, but they can have negative effects on people such as depression, anxiety, and addiction to the use of the cell phone. The smartphone is not only a phone but a computer itself which allows us to access social media sites and the internet whenever it is convenient for us. In 2011 the smartphone companies sold over one million of these devices, which means that four out of every ten people have a smartphone. Us as human beings are social animals and we crave the need and sense of communication and the technology based smartphone just intensifies that craving. (Bousaid) But, what are we really doing to ourselves when we are constantly worried about our smartphones? We have went from a world of in person communication to always wanting to communicate through our smartphones, but this is destroying our ability to communicate with other human beings in a face-to-face conversation. But, our communication styles are not the only thing that is suffering from the newest technology. In an education based field, children are becoming more distracted and distant causing a decrease in the learning that is being done (Bousaid). NBC News reports, “people who are interrupted by technology score 20 percent lower on a standard cognition test. A second demonstrated that some students, even when on their best behavior, can 't concentrate on homework for more than two minutes without distracting themselves by using social media or writing an email”(Sullivan). In the career field the smartphone 1 also hurts the productivity that is being done, research has been conducted that shows that only eleven minutes of work can be done before the employee becomes distracted by their smartphone, which means that these employees are constantly distracted by their smartphones. The decline in our education, communication and career choices can all be linked to smartphones and the constant evolution of our
The smart phones have affected our culture in many possible ways which leads to increase in personal efficiency and communication. Even though, smartphone can become a tool for constant connection with the world; the smartphone also makes people disconnect with the world around them such as friends and family. As Zackary suggests that “The invention and rising popularity of the smartphone has completely transformed our culture of socialization and interaction.”(2015) Smartphones are very powerful tools that can allow people to use many functions such as phone, text, internet, apps, games, and social media and so on. Smartphones are readily available and so easy to use that people are less willing to interact with another people more than their smartphone. Smartphone becomes a necessity for many people of their life because of their usefulness. We constantly see people who are using their smartphone more often, which a
Forty-one years ago on April 7, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper changed the world by making the world’s first cell phone call. With a 10-inch-long, 2.5-pound phone nicknamed “the brick” he called his engineering nemesis at the much bigger company Bell Labs (Here& Now, 2014). The phone gave 30 minutes of talk time after 10 hours of recharging and it cost a grand total of $3995. In those days, the average middle-class person could not afford to buy a mobile phone. By the late 1990s, cell phones became progressively accessible to the overall population. (Ef.org.vt.edu, 2014). Ever since then the sizes and the technologies in and of cell phones has been changing to accommodate the masses. Decades later, cell phones, and now smartphones, live in the pocket or purse of nearly everyone in the United States. Cell phones tell us the time, give us directions, take pictures, entertain us and help us exercise, all while making it possible to post each and every sordid detail to the internet without going anywhere near a computer. These new devices however convenient also bring complications along with them. This research paper will delved into the advantages and disadvantages of a cell phone, visit the health risk and factors affecting people who are exposed to cell phones, Discuss how cell phones have changed our way of communicating and socializing with one another, outline preventative measures surrounding the way cell phones have degraded our way of life and expound on the Thesis: Though cellular phones have provided many advantages since inception their cause more harm than their benefits they are worth.
Despite the short amount of time since the introduction of the smartphone, the rapid development of the software and technology has had a tremendous effect on the everyday life in society today. The concept of communicating through a telephone was developed in the 1870s. Devices to transmit speech electrically were designed by Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell, but Bell's design was patented first. On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell achieved one of his greatest successes in the making of the telephone. This brought upon a major change in communication and gave leeway to the improvement of the telephone in the days to come (Bellis, 2013b). During the 20th century there were many innovations regarding the telephone. In 1973, the first call from a portable phone was made Martin Cooper, who was a Motorola researcher and executive at the time. Since its inception, the advancement of cell phones has been exponential (Bellis, 2013a). As a result, cell phones have changed how society works in today's world. Many people lack the insight of how cell phones, or in this case, smart phones, affect the people that use them. So the question is, how is the evolution of smart phones impacting our society?
Smartphones and social media are drugs to people. Call them phone addicts. Phone addicts are the ones that wake up in the morning and check their social media or they cannot simply live without their phones. In the New York Times, author Sherry Turkle compares how people’s communications changed from face-to-face talk to smartphone talk. People became too dependent using their smartphones and social media to communicate to the outside world. She also sees how this impacts the younger generation communication with others. Verbal communication became harder for people to do due to smartphones and social media. Health is becoming an issue to smartphones users. People started to have neck, fingers, and vision problems. Smartphones are cancerous
The Negative Effects of Mobile Phones Voice mobile telephony has become widespread since the 1990s. The compass of the modern people is the mobile phone. It is used for expressing movement and its direction. For a mobile phone user, moving around in the city becomes a series of spaces used for keeping contacts and taking care of things ongoing. People call from certain places to certain other people without the fixed line.
The world today is a result of centuries of evolution; one of the major adaptations is technology, specifically the invention of the smartphone. The smartphone is a cellular phone that has the capabilities of performing similar functions to that of a computer (Oxford Dictionaries’ online dictionary, n.d.). The smartphone is owned by youth for the most part; however, adults and seniors are also turning toward using this device. This in turn demonstrates the popularity of this marvelous device, and is the reason why it is constantly monitored by its users. The continuous evolving of the populations' wants and needs such as communication, searching of information, entertainment and recording, makes owning a smartphone essential, and beneficial as it is portable, reliable and efficient.
Cell phones have changed from an item of luxury to an everyday necessity for some people. Twenty five years ago, a phone was just a way to contact someone. Mobile phones have become one of the most common tools of communications for both young and old. Cellular devices have redefined relationships and social conduct, and transformed the daily lives of many individuals. Cell phones no longer function just as a communication device. Steven Spielberg once said, “Technology can be our best friend, yet it can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, and to imagine something wonderful.” Spielberg’s quote directly applies to today’s generation as the advancements of technology continue to impact society. More specifically, as producers continue to advance and improve cell phones, these devices become more and more popular and high in demand. While avid cell phone users rely heavily on their devices, many of these users may not be aware of the possibilities too much cell phone use can cause. The increasing popularity and demand for the cell phone, has resulted in several negative outcomes such as death, less face-to-face interaction, and unnecessary expenses.
