Emily Dickinson born on December 10, 1830, was a famous poet from Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily was very secluded most of her life. She wrote thousands of poems about death. Emily Dickinson was a very respectful child. She was well-mannered with everyone she came across. She attended a school for seven years while learning several subjects like literature, geology, English and Latin. She witnessed her friend and cousin becoming ill and then dieing shortly after. Emily Dickinson followed a religious path. She idealized religion in most of her poetry. She decided to stay in the house at all times and focused on her poetry. Many people didn't understand her actions of being distant from the rest of the world. How does one justify the importance of one's contributions to the world with a distressful belief?

Emily stayed in her families house, rarely meeting others from the outside. (Biography Online, 2010) Emily was secluded from the rest of her social class. Although Emily Dickson was departed from the rest of the world she would sit in her room and write poetry. She wrote several that weren't published until she passed away. She was bought into a family that was well off and church going. Emily Dickinson did not attend the church sessions. She wasn't involved in serious relationships. Emily had many male friends and acquaintances but never pursued a intimate relationship. Emily began to have a relationship with a woman that became Emily's brother wife soon after.

...ms. She came across over 1,000 poems and ignored whomever requested such a thing. Her sister's name was Vinnie. Mabel Todd and Terrance Higgingson, Emily's friend came together and helped get Emily's poem published in 1893. Now the memory of Emily Dickinson lives on. Emily Dickinson is now a well know writer with intense passion, heart, pain and sorrow.

We may not know Emily Dickinson personally but we can see her long journey of seclusion from herself as well as the world. The poetry and the letters are what probably kept her a live for so long.

The life of Emily Dickinson plays a role in Humanities by applying critical thinking into the certain aspects of her life. Humanities allows me to better understand the human mind and how one era is different from another so there is some room for bias ideas. This has definitely shown me the importance of Humanities.

After her father died she met Reverend Charles Wadsworth. Since she stayed inside her house for most of her life, and many of her poems were not discovered until after her death, Dickinson was uninvolved in the publication process of her poetry. This means that every Dickinson poem in print today is just a guess—an assumption of what the author wanted on the page. As a result, Dickinson maintains an aura of mystery as a writer. However, this mystery is often overshadowed by a more prevalent notion of Dickinson as an eccentric recluse or a madwoman. Of course, it is difficult to give one label to Dickinson and expect that label to summarize her entire life. Certainly she was a complex woman who could not accurately be described with one sentence or phrase. Her poems are unique and quite interestingly composed—just looking at them on the page is pleasurable—and it may very well prove useful to examine the author when reading her poems. Understanding Dickinson may lead to a better interpretation of the poems, a better appreciation of her life’s work. What is not useful, however, is reading her poems while looking back at the one sentence summary of Dickinson’s life.
