Group Reflective Paper
Reflection can be described as an active process of exploration instead of just description, in which people obtain learning and critical understanding from their experience (Boud et al., 1985). As Schön (1983) demonstrated in his “Reflective Practice Theory’, reflection provides us a chance to critically evaluate the previous experiences and practices and try to find out how enhancement can be made. It could act as a future reference to guide us towards right direction. In practice, most of reflection process is individual. However, nowadays many organizations have applied a group reflection and succeeded in analysing different issues. For an organization or a group, reflection allows collective clearly understand their strengths and weaknesses so as to improve collective actions and maintain a competitive advantage towards their common goals. In this article, we will do a group reflective paper to describe and reflect how our group worked in preparing the presentation of leadership module and what we have learned from this experience. First, we will present a theoretical and practical

Iszatt-White and Saunders (2014) defined distributed leadership as a flexible concept that shifts back and forth between coordination and collaborating among members of group, which concentrates on relationships and interaction between members themselves and between members and environment during their work. In this type of leadership, the role of a leader is concealed by the competencies of members of the group. In our group, the emergence of this kind of leadership might due to the fact that we all have similar MBTI types, both male members have ISTJ while both female members have ISFJ, which accentuates quietness, hardworking and little concern about who should be leader. During
Leadership is an important element in the functioning of group interactions toward an organized goal. Leadership has been defined in many different ways by sociologists and social psychologists alike, numbering too many to discuss here. The most common element found in these definitions is "that leadership involves a process of influence between a leader and followers to attain group, organizational, or societal goals" (Hollander, 1985). In small group interactions, leadership is usually an assigned status, with the "followers" designating, both consciously and subconsciously, someone as a leader. This is a person who, according to the group members, is believed to have those characteristics which are most suited to accomplish the task and objectives of the group (Bales and Slater, 1955). Much of the available early research that I was able to attain focused on leadership and the concept of leadership in terms of political situations. When viewed from a political standpoint, the study of leadership pertains to the analysis of relationships between those who possess power and those who don't possess power (power will be discussed in det...
This paper is about a reflective report. This report should demonstrate my ability to reflect and think critically myself, about my values and also about my attitudes. It goes on to explain the differences between beliefs, attitudes and values. It will also assess the impact of beliefs, attitudes and values on my own behaviour. It will also discuss management theories relevant to my job. It will finally, conclude and evaluate how someone with different beliefs, attitudes and values might interpret the theory differently.
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
Collective styles of leaders use their strengths equally matching the other leaders. A collective style leader feeds off other leaders and their leadership to create efficiency of the team. A team has individuals with their own unique purpose, but each have the same common goal in mind. Each member of the team must collectively cover his or her teammate’s weaknesses to complete the task, and the same vice versa. Every member place an equal part in the completion of the mission when limited, it makes it difficult to complete the mission. Similar to a situational style of leader a collective style of leader is aware of the Soldiers strengths and weaknesses and places the Soldiers where they will have to utilize their strengths to complete the task. Effective leadership comes from experiences and initiative. When placed in a position where encouragement to use experiences to reach a goal, take the initiative to help others understand the goal in turn, creating collective
Leadership can be defined as the method in which one influences a group of individuals for a common goal. There have many great leaders in the world but these leaders are not born leaders. One must have willpower and the desire to become an effective leader. These leaders become dependent upon based upon their abilities and their success. A leader is looked upon for guidance and the inspiration to know what the right thing to do is. The theoretical foundations of the research of leadership are firmly supported. To better understand the foundations and understand the focus of leadership, it is essential to have knowledge of the history of leadership, the meaning and concept of leadership, types of leaders and leadership styles, and issues in leadership such as issues with culture and gender. According to Antonakis (2004), “leadership researchers have struggled for most of the last century to put together an integrated, theoretically cohesive view of the nature of leadership, invariably leading to disappointment in those who studied it” (p.4). An overview of the history of leadership is necessary to understand the concept of leadership because it also provides a framework for other areas of leadership. In any conventional group, individuals fill different role and one of those roles must the leader which is essential for the group to achieve it purposes.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Leadership can take many different forms, depending on the person and the situation in which it is needed. Collaborative leadership is a leadership style in which a leader brings together a large group of people, with a variety of backgrounds, to make a productive decision and act upon it. According to Chrislip and Larson (1994):
The concept of leadership arises out of the need for cooperative action by human beings to achieve certain goals. Leadership seeks to identify and deploy the groups’ pooled resources to tackle problems in order to achieve set objectives. While human beings are independent and capable of individual action, there are many situations in real life that require dependence on one person or a small group of people who have a broad view of the intervening issues enabling them to direct the actions of the rest of the individuals. The degree of success from this effort is a measure of the leadership skill present within a team.
As an assignment for sociology class, I had the opportunity to keep in mind to play the role as an observer -to understand the dynamics behind social interaction- when I attended my family-friend’s twelfth birthday party (Nina). To keep my observation under radar, I decided to tell everyone I encountered that my voice was silent due to my common cold, which I did have that day. The interactions and systems of behaviors are what make up group dynamics in a social setting, such as those I analyzed at a birthday party, all fell into place. The characterizations of the many sub groups within the party became notable on what set them apart by the following: religious beliefs, work groups, school groups, age groups, and etc. while the mother is
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. In this past three months I think a lot of opportunities have been created to shadowing with (beside and behind) and being a part of group members to learn. In addition, this class has taught me about the skills and how effectively help
In this brief paper, I will articulate some of the outcomes of my reflection, reading, and research, organized within a framework consisting of two parts. Part one, “Self,” will focus almost exclusively on the application of my learning to my own, personal, leadership journey. Part two, “World,” will focus primarily on the broader application of my learning, concentrating on the how what I have learned affects the way that I perceive and engage with the culture and organization within with I live and
Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Not only is there a process involved in making individual decisions, process is involved in group decisions as well. This paper attempts give insight into my reflection of my group decision process.
My parents arrived in the United States hoping for a better future not for themselves, but for the baby they carried in their arms. We would often move from relatives ' houses since my parents couldn’t afford renting an apartment themselves. We were fortunate enough to have caring relatives who didn 't mind us living with them since they knew the hardships we were going through. I grew up in a household where only Spanish was spoken given that both my parents didn’t speak any English at all. When I was in kindergarten, my teacher was afraid that I would be behind the rest of my classmates, given that I only spoke Spanish fluently. I was fortunate to receive free tutoring from my kindergarten teacher. We would often read books together until
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
