Textbook reading and reading for pleasure are very different, in the sense that reading for pleasure does not required to take what is being read and use it to educate on a particular subject. Ones methods and styles have to change in learning and retaining the information while understanding what is being read. Reading actively requires four steps in order to prepare for writing papers, research, tests and exams these are; previewing, strategizing, concentrating, and reviewing. Everyone will develop their own reading and studying habits, these steps are just the guideline in order to enhance success. These active reading strategies need to be in place to get the most out the information that is being read. A vast amount of what could be accomplished in college will depend on the understanding of the material in the textbooks. Trying to find out what to plan, such as hotels, place to visit, or even restaurants in advance, so that there is an awareness of what to expect and what other information needs to be obtained. Previewing a textbook accomplishes much the same. The main purpose of previewing is to link what is being read to what one already knows and on what is being taught. Accomplishing this requires several steps. Reading the introduction paragraph quickly for the chapter gives a basic idea of what is being discussed. While skimming through the chapter look for italicized words, bold face, and subtitles are set up this way because they highlight the essential topic on what is being explained. Keeping a mental note or even write down the key points to practice as a guide moving forward. While executing this consider the question what additional information is needs to be known?
