The psychodynamic approach to helping others is developed upon the psychoanalytic theory in which was developed by Sigmund Freud. Freud is overall well known for his knowledge and insights regarding developing theories and methods for treating unhappy individuals founded on observations of mental and emotional progressions. The Freudian theory has been modified by other psychodynamic theorist among the years however, Freud has had the ultimate influence on this theory of development as a whole. Freud believed that behavior is determined by the biological natures of a child and childhood experiences, and ultimately derives from the competing internal motives of an individual (Okun, 2008/2002). These psychosexual stages of development are crucial for personality development as healthy personality cannot be developed without them. These stages of development include oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. The oral stage entails sucking and biting of an infant and helps to develop trust with their peers. This stage is pleasurable for most, and if this stage is fulfilled the individual tends to be relatively more positive later in life. The anal stage is when an infant experiences curiosity I smelling, touching, and playing with one’s feces. The child learns to understand the feelings of maintenance and elimination through doing so, as well as negative emotions accompanied with power. Phallic stage is where a child starts to experience stimulation through the genital region and starts to develop positive and negative relations with other individuals. Latency is when a child starts to lose interest in sexual behaviors, they tend to remain more concentrated on socialization and focusing on school and other aspects of their outside world. Bianca thought about it, but remained unsure. She determined she is afraid of not being able to move on from the hurt, possibly not being able to move on from the incident, and maybe not being able to ever trust again. She stated she is deathly afraid of centipedes and when she is encountered with one in person, she finds herself experiencing a high level of anxiety – sometimes hyperventilating. As I analyze what is discussed and what she is experiencing – it is determined that Bianca is allowing her id and unconscious mind to control her feelings and attitudes. She is unable to let go of a negative experience therefore the transference of something she is afraid of in real life is showing through her dreams and her negative feelings towards centipedes.
