Recommended: Social media : beneficial or harmful

Social media is a great source for breaking news. Sixty-five percent of story research from media reporters and editors come from social networking sites like FaceBook, Twitter, and LinkdeIn (Marrouat 3). For example, during the Libyan revolution Facebook became the Libyans only reliable source of news about what was going on within the country. On another note, sixty-seven percent of law enforcement believe social media helps solve crimes more quickly because criminals often expose themselves online by bragging. The Vancouver Canucks scandal is the perfect example of how social media can be used to solve crime (Shirky 5). After the Canucks lost the 2011 Stanley Cup, Vancouver erupted in a number of riots and social networking was used to restrain the rioters because they were tagged in over two thousand public pictures so police were able to catch rioters. Social media also had an significant role in the banning of Google Earth by the Bahrain government after a map of a royal family's land circulated the internet; Consequently, the government opened access to Google Earth again within four days because of the discontent expressed to social networks. Historical events like the ones listed above are molded around the use of social technologies. In The New Digital Age: Reshaping The Future of People, Nations and Business, authors Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen anticipate what the future will hold if the world continues in this technology revolution. Using logic, insight and observation they elaborate upon the endangerments and advantages the future will hold. Although social media is a powerful tool it does not just coordinate historical moments, social media coordinates a large portion of everyday life in the 21st century.
