Pros and Cons of Adopting School Dress Codes
Today, there are numerous controversies about wearing school uniforms. Some people believe that wearing uniforms can help to eliminate unproductive behaviors, while others believe that wearing uniforms help individuals in developing their identity through liberal expression. In the article “Disadvantages & Advantages of High Schools Adopting Dress Codes,” Maria Ocadiz, effectively presents the pros and cons of wearing school uniforms.
Ocadiz organizes her essay in paragraphs with sub topics. She looks at two reasons for dress codes and two reasons against. The two reasons for having dress codes are to produce an environment “conducive” to learning and to keep order in schools. The two reasons against
Hence, using these facts makes her arguments more effective and grabs the reader’s attention and provides a lot to think about. Expense is another issue that the author speaks about and shows deep concern for the poorer class, who are not able to buy some of these uniforms. Buying one set of clothing that can be useful for both occasions, would be an easier way to spend less money. Therefore, the author is not just thinking about herself or one set of persons, she is looking on the general public, and that’s basically how most people would think especially if they are for the poor.
The writer addressed the general public but mainly school administrators, students and parents; to enlighten them that we need not to just focus on one issue but that there are many things to say about adopting a school dress code. She was objective in her views because she gave both pros and cons of having a school’s dress code and how each issue can affect the school’s community including parents. The presentation was well organized, concise and understandable.
School uniforms or not, the conclusion is that both have their negative and positive effects based on what the author said, and this can create conflicting views.
