James Monroe, Who is he? What is the Monroe Doctrine? James Monroe wasn't only the fifth president of the U.S. he was much more, but what? Although it is a big part of history, many people don’t know about the Monroe Doctrine.
President James Monroe created a foreign policy titled the Monroe Doctrine. In it he warned Europeans not to interfere with the western-hemisphere. James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States. In 1865 the doctrine was invoked. During the Revolutionary War, Monroe served under General George Washington. He also served in many major battles, and was wounded at the battle of Trenton. The countries of Europe ruled over the western hemisphere in the late 1700s. Roosevelt believed in international police power. He sent U.S. marines to Santo Domingo, Nicaragua in 1911, and Haiti in 1915. He essentially wanted to keep the Europeans out. When the Soviet Union began building missile launching sites, the Monroe Doctrine was symbolically invoked in 1962.
Surprisingly, James Monroe was the first president to travel by ways of a steam boat. With this he visited the southern states and the northern states. He was the first to do so since Washington did. Many towns around the states greeted him with open arms, some held parades, others had a lavish feast, and many other grand events. Oddly enough, the city of Charleston, North Carolina actually came up with the grand idea to barbecue a ox for the president's visit.
What is a doctrine? A doctrine is a belief or set of beliefs held and is taught by a church, political party, or other group. The Monroe Doctrine says that the U.S. will not have anything to do with European countries. Many people in the political party wanted to misuse the Doctrine. After the Battle of Trenton, Monroe went back the college of William and Mary to study law. He served many positions in the U.S. including secretary of state, a member of congress, and a U.S. senator. Monroe was also the last president of the ‘Virginia Dynasty’.
The foreign policy that bears Monroe’s name, perhaps the most enduring to represent his legacies. It wasn’t known as the “Monroe Doctrine” until 30 years after the delivery. At the congress annual message in 1823, Monroe warned Europe and the rest of the world, to stay out of America's acquisition. The message holds a strong statement and is not to take lightly, it was the early U.S. policy.
James Monroe had a capital named after him, Made by a American Colonization Society during the Monroe administration. Also the Colony of Liberty was founded in 1821, so that freed blacks could go to. Most of which have been separated from generations of ancestors.
