I will never forget the company Christmas party of 1994. My ex-husband worked for a very successful cancer treatment center; so successful, they had built a new multi-billion dollar facility that year and the five physician partners who owned it had rewarded themselves with Villas in France, ranches in Wyoming, new cars that equaled a nurse’s pay for maybe ten years, etc. Instead of having the Christmas party at their usual lavish location, it was held in the reception area of the new Cancer Center.
Every year, Christmas bonuses were given out to all the employees at this Christmas party. There were a number of employees who depended heavily on these Christmas bonuses to provide decent Christmases for their families and even the employees that made more money used the bonus to pay off their credit cards for their Christmas purchases. Even with the common knowledge of huge company profits, the display of their financial successes with the new facility, and the well know recent purchases of the partners, one of the partners had the nerve to stand up at the party and say that he hoped everyone had a wonderful time at the party – and then lowered the boom. No Christmas bonuses this year. No excuse. Just no bonuses. Needless to say, the tone of the party quickly went from one of joyous celebration to devastation and many people left soon after the announcement. It was a well know fact that a lot of the employees quietly returned the Christmas gifts they had purchased the next day and their families had meager Christmases.
Why would a group of doctors so blatantly successful do such a cruel thing to the people who actually did all the work – who helped them to make their lucrative profits? Because they can.

... obviously prejudicial and demeaning to the women within the organization. Sexual inuendos, comments about their bodies and their appearance were totally out of place.
It was very uncomfortable reading this case study of power and politics at play as I could feel for the employees, having been in their situation in the past. Working for employers that are embroiled in power plays instead of working as a team player with the entire company in mind – including the employee’s well-being – is a very negative feeling that can lead to a lack of self-esteem and a destruction of your ability to perform your job efficiently. Using power as a means to motivate is one thing – using power as a means to intimidate is another.

The doctor is a greedy dude who refused to work without payment just because of Kino's social class and race. To neglect any one of treatment is bad, but to deny a child treatment is cruel and should not be allowed whatsoever. He broke the Hippocratic oath because he wanted to go back to
While working at the OB-GYN department in the hospital, Dr. Vandall, as a Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, learned that another employee of the hospital, Dr. Margaret Nordell was engaged in a level of treatment that was unethical and violated accepted standards of care. It was his duty to the hospital and to the patients, to monitor the competence of his staff members. Although he tried to take the proper steps to deal with it within the hospital, he ended up reporting this to the North Dakota Board of Medical Examiners. It was concluded by the Board that the treatment of Dr. Nordell was gross negligence and they suspended her license to practice medicine.
At first, I believed that a patient should have the say so and get what they demand. I didn’t feel sympathetic for the health care provider one bit. I was able to look through the eyes of a physician and see the trials that they have to go through. It is not easy making the decisions that they have to make. There job is based on decisions, and most of it is the patient’s. “There will certainly be times when I will be faced with a request from a patient or patient’s representative that I will personally find morally difficult, but one that is still legally and ethically acceptable. must be very difficult to work in an area with little control over what you want to do.” (Bradley 1). Even though I do not fully understand a health care providers everyday role, I do know that they are faced with painful options. I personally feel that I can not work in this field for that exact reason. Health care providers play an extremely important role in our society, and others need to look upon
In closing this story, as well as many others should be a lesson on why we as patients should research our doctor’s background intensely before we choose to be under their care. If we are referred to a doctor by another doctor it is okay to still investigate their history with past patients. It is our bodies and our choice who we let perform surgery or any other procedure on at all times. If we feel uncomfortable at any time for any reason we have the right to refuse care from any doctor. So many people do not realize this and it is a sad fact. I urge everyone to do their homework on their doctor before choosing one. Look at their school back ground, accreditations, years in the field as well as lawsuits or complaints filed. These steps will help weed out the negligent doctors.
In looking at these instances, the doctors seemed to have thought their actions normal. They thought that since they were treating the patient they automatically had access to their cells, tissues, DNA, that they could take without permission and use to develop science or to even become rich and famous like Dr. Golde tried to do. One might say that no matter how useful a person's biological property can be to western medicine and science, it does not excuse the violation of privacy of a patient. Ostensibly, there is no need to worry about a patient saying no if the doctor has moral and beneficial intentions for the use of a patient's private, biological
Doctors work under intense pressure, and if a pill could fix a patient’s problems than many saw nothing wrong with that. What exacerbated the problem was that many hospitals also changed their modus operandi with regards to treatment. In some hospitals, “doctors were told they could be sued if they did not treat pain aggressively, which meant with opiates (95). However once the patient became addicted and could no longer get their prescription legally refilled, the drug dealers saw their chance. What is surprising is the fact that pharmaceutical companies acted in the same manner as drug dealers. Both sides did not care about the end user, and the problems they would have to deal with after using what was given to them. Their motive was purely to profit as much as possible, and they did not care about who would get hurt as a result of their
He said, “Studies of specific types of error, too, have found that repeat offenders are not the problem. The fact is that virtually everyone who cares for hospital patients will make serious mistakes, and even commit acts of negligence, every year. For this reason, doctors are seldom outraged when the press reports yet another medical horror story. They usually have a different reaction: This could be me. The important question isn’t how to keep bad physicians from harming patients; it’s how to keep good physicians from harming patients” (658). Like Gawande asked—how do you keep good physicians from harming patients? Even the best of doctors and surgeons manage to make mistakes that led to being sued or even worst—they get to experience the death of their
The medical staff neglect to patient they did not think it was worthy of saving. I would have sued, and made sure they would have lost their license because the job is not fit for them. It makes me think how many people have died in their care because they did not feel the patient life was worthy trying to save. Being a doctor and nurse is about caring for others and wanting to help. I am happy that he still decided to be a nurse because he wanted to better the nursing field because of what he experienced and because he is a caring person. The second nurse was a Labor and Delivery nurse in John Hopkins hospital is the nurse path I want to go. I love babies and find the general aspect of pregnancy amazing. I was born premature and while my mom was in labor at the hospital the nurse had promised my mom that I would survive. I would like to help other babies like be
(Tost, Gino & Larrick 2013) argues that “when a formal leader experiences a heightened subjective sense of power, he or she tends to dominate group discussions and interactions, which leads other team members to perceive that their views and perspectives are not valued”. This perceived imbalance definitely hampers any attempt at managing workplace conflict. When employees feel that they have no authority or empowerment they tend to be disengaged, and disengaged employees effect productivity. Low productivity can be considered a form of dissatisfaction and thus labelled a conflict that must be addressed by both employee and manager.
When a person seeks medical attention they go with the hope that their personal rights will not be violated with the belief that doctors will uphold their personal standards. Unfortunately, this is not always so for people who visit the hospital. There are documented cases in United States history involving African Americans being experimented on for the greater good without their knowledge or consent, and some of the most heinous cases involve doctors injecting their study groups with life threatening diseases. What happens when good science goes bad and who has the right to relegate the status of another human being as less than? In this research paper we will examine a clinical testing case study featuring the violation and exploitation
Doctors have to go through many years of studying and many more hours of practicing on people. These qualities make any doctor seem god-like to the eyes of everyday people. Doctors are trusted blindly and people are led to believe that doctors are always honest. In the story, The Use of Force by William Carlos Williams, the parents of Matilda question the tactics the doctor is using to properly diagnose the girl but trust that the doctor knows what he is doing and lets him use force anyway. These cases are seen all over the world as well. There have been many reported cases of doctors using force to allow patients to get treated. Some patients however, do not wish to be treated because of things like religion or preference or other reasons but doctors still treat them in order to save them from themselves. The power struggle creates anger and resentment from both parties and blurs the line between personal rights and saving lives. In an article written by Jessica Grose, doctors force a woman to have a C-Section because they believe it was in the baby’s best interest. However, the woman did not want to have the surgery performed. This led to the doctors threatening to sue the woman for possible child endangerment. The woman, in fear of possibly killing her child, sided with the health care providers even though personally she did not want to have the surgery performed. This
Unfortunately, being inspiring to employees is not enough. These situations occur when employees face challenges in accomplishing goals. In such situations, a leader needs to exercise power and influence to push forth the desired goals. While the course identified five sources of power, I believe only three should be considered for an effective leader. The first is legitimate power (6), which is often considered the first source of power in the organizations I have worked in. The source of power comes...
Small business owners and management at every level of any company should always be aware and listen closely to what is being said by their employees or associates. An action that undermines or impedes a co-worker’s right to do his or her job is another practice used in office politics to cause problems. It is good for employees to form bonds and friendships, but when cliques are formed in the office and others are bullied or cold shouldered, major complications can occur. Some of these problems can even lead to situations of workplace violence. The following are some of the signs and downfalls of office politics and ways to address situations before they get out of control.

The concept of industrial relations involves the interaction of employers and employees, for that reason without power and authority will be a lack of direction and control over the system of industrial relations. Authority frequently comes from the duties and responsibilities delegated to a position holder in a bureaucratic structure whilst Power is the possession of authority, control, or influence by which a person influences the actions of others, either by direct authority or by some other, added intangible
