CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION “Near death experiences make us address our understanding of human consciousness so the more we know the better” Zalika Klemenc-Ketis Near death experiences (NDE) can take place to anyone anytime anywhere at the time when he or she comes in close contact with death. It is an altered condition of consciousness resultant from harsh trauma or any other life threatening situation in which a sequence of specific characteristics are there although the occurrence is highly individualized. A Gallup poll revealed that 35% of patients who have had a close brush with death have had a Near Death Experience. In some studies the percentage has ranged from 11% to 40%. Near-death experiences may vary in intensity. Some patients have a mild experience and remember little or none about it afterwards. But for others, a Near Death Experience (NDE) is a profound and life changing experience. Someone who's had a Near Death Experience (NDE) may be reluctant to talk about it because he's afraid people will think he's "crazy" Or, if his a Near Death Experience (NDE) was disturbing, he may want to forget about it. But assessing for a a Near Death Experience (NDE) and supporting the patient who's had one are important because having a Near Death Experience (NDE) may have a profound effect on his life and relationships.1 Dr. Raymond Moody is recognized as the father of NDE research. Raymond Moody, the psychiatrist who coined the term near-death experience in 1975, defined them as “profound spiritual events that happen, uninvited, to some individuals at the point of death”. Mental Status Examination In this study, Mini Mental Status Examination is test that evaluates five areas of mental status, namely, orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall and language with a total score is thirty. The cardiac arrest survivors with a total score of thirty out of thirty was be selected for the study. Delimitation The study was delimited to: • cardiac arrest survivors with near death experiences in selected Panchayats of Kannur district • cardiac arrest survivors who can speak Malayalam. Summary This chapter dealt with the background of the study, problem statement with purpose and objectives. The assumptions, variables, definition of terms and delimitation of the study are also included in this chapter.
